I just stumbled over A Clockwork Orange, a disturbing peek into the future.
The scenario in A Clockwork Orange, in which the main character, Alex, undergoes a controversial psychological conditioning technique to reform his violent behavior, raises thought-provoking questions about free will, morality, and the potential misuse of technology.

While the film depicts a dystopian future, some parallels can be drawn to the current landscape of AI-generated music and the challenges surrounding copyright and fair compensation. And, of course, I will use NIM's technical platform to make my case: it is a challenge that we urgently need to address...

Just as the "Ludovico Technique" in A Clockwork Orange aimed to modify Alex's behavior by exposing him to disturbing imagery, AI algorithms can analyze vast amounts of existing music metadata to generate new compositions. This raises concerns about the potential exploitation of original creators' intellectual property and the need for proper attribution and compensation.

As with any powerful technology, misuse or unintended consequences are risks. Just as the "Ludovico Technique" in A Clockwork Orange raised ethical questions about the extent to which an individual's free will should be manipulated, AI in music generation prompts discussions about the boundaries of creativity, originality, and artistic expression.

The Fair Music Project, initiated by the International Music Council, with New Internet Media and SKAP, aims to address the disparities in the music streaming system, especially for emerging artists.
The project is propelled by the NIM technical platform, which is central to ensuring fair compensation for every stream — an approach currently misunderstood as universal. The upcoming months will feature stakeholder consultations to shape this innovative platform, focusing on fair pay models and enhanced features like discoverability and audio quality. A beta will be tested before the final rollout. The project encompasses capacity-building for artists, legal analysis, and advocacy for equitable practices in music streaming, mirroring the IMC’s commitment to the Five Music Rights and supported by the EU’s Creative Europe Program.
