Strong professional communities have a responsibility: to invest in the generation that will follow.

For Hellenic Bankers Association - UK, that commitment is reflected in the HBA UK Student Award, now in its 6th year, recognising outstanding students from the Greek and Cypriot community for their academic excellence and ideas.

At the 31st HBA UK Gala, we were delighted to congratulate this year's recipient, Ioanna Kostika, a Law student at Queen Mary University of London. Selected from a highly competitive field of 17 applicants, her winning paper explored the integration of ESG principles into financial services, demonstrating thoughtful analysis of one of the sector's evolving priorities.

The award was presented by Dimitris Tsesmetzoglou, CEO Greece & Cyprus at Howden Hellas SA, whose presence on stage reflected the importance of recognising and encouraging the next generation of professionals.

The Student Award represents more than academic achievement. It reflects HBA UK's belief in connecting generations, creating opportunities and supporting emerging talent across banking, law, and technology.

We are grateful to our longstanding partner, Howden Hellas, for their commitment to highlighting emerging talent.

Congratulations to Ioanna and to all this year's applicants. The future is shaped by talented young people who challenge ideas, embrace innovation, and HBA UK is proud to support that journey.

A significant announcement on the future of financial supervision was made from the stage of the 31st HBA UK Gala in London.

We were honoured to welcome Vasiliki Lazarakou, Chair of the Hellenic Capital Market Commission, as keynote speaker at this year's Gala at Drapers' Hall.

In her speech, Vassiliki Lazarakou revealed that the HCMC has recently deployed a new Artificial Intelligence-powered supervisory tool, developed and adapted for the Greek market, to help identify potentially unauthorised investment activity across online and social media channels. Following its pilot phase, the initiative is expected to place the HCMC among the first capital markets regulators in the European Union to utilise such a capability in support of investor protection and market integrity.

Her keynote explored the transformative role of AI across financial services, from risk management and fraud detection to compliance and supervision, while also highlighting the importance of governance, cybersecurity and human oversight.

Opening the evening, HBA UK Chairman Xenofon Zacharoudis reflected on the enduring role of unity, continuity and innovation in shaping the Association's mission over the past 31 years. Bringing together leaders from banking, investment, regulation, law and business, the 31st HBA UK Gala once again demonstrated London's role as a meeting point for the Greek and Cypriot financial diaspora and the wider international financial community.

We thank Vasiliki and all our guests for contributing to an evening of meaningful discussion, connection and insight.

The Hellenic Bankers Association (HBA) UK is honoured to announce its 31st Annual Gala, taking place on Saturday, 13 June 2026, at the historic Drapers’ Hall in the City of London.

For more than three decades, the HBA UK Gala has brought together leaders from across banking, finance, regulation, business, and public life - serving as a longstanding point of connection for the global Greek and Cypriot communities.

The 31st Gala will unfold across the historic chambers of one of London’s most distinguished livery halls. Steeped in centuries of history with its architectural beauty and its curated art collection featuring royal portraiture including the recently unveiled portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, Drapers’ Hall provides a setting that reflects the values we share: heritage, excellence, and continuity.

On 2 December, Hellenic Bankers Association (HBA) UK welcomed members in a full-house Christmas Soirée, for an evening of thoughtful dialogue and professional networking.

In the bespoke setting of L'oscar London, we welcomed Alex Patelis for a fireside discussion on his newly published “Greece’s comeback: How a nation regained credibility”, exploring how credibility is rebuilt - from the strategy behind the comeback and the role of a technocrat in public service, to Greece’s economic narrative and the country’s evolving strategic role in a changing world.

The conversation, chaired by HBA UK Chairman Xenofon Zacharoudis, was enriched further by insights shared during the evening by Christos Megalou, CEO, Piraeus Bank, and Christina Papaconstantinou, Deputy Governor, Bank of Greece and member of the European Central Bank Supervisory Board. Their insights brought an invaluable market-and-policy dimension to the conversation, bridging strategic narrative with the practical mechanics of credibility and decision making.

The evening was also a wonderful opportunity to welcome our latest corporate member, Snappi - Greece’s first neobank - to the HBA UK community.

As we head into 2026, we remain committed to bringing together the Greek and Cypriot financial international community for thought leadership and professional connection. Happy New Year.

At a sold-out event co-hosted by the Hellenic Bankers Association - UK and the Hellenic Observatory, LSE, we welcomed Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Greece’s Minister of the Economy and Finance, for an insightful conversation on Greece’s economic trajectory and the next phase of its digital transformation.

The evening opened with remarks by HBA Chairman, Xenofon Zacharoudis, followed by an in-depth discussion with the Minister, moderated by Professor Vassilis Monastiriotis, Director of the Hellenic Observatory.

The occasion carried particular distinction, as it took place just weeks before Minister Pierrakakis’ election as President of the Eurogroup. We are grateful to all who joined us: your questions and engagement made for a thoughtful and substantive exchange. With the event at capacity, we also appreciate the many who expressed interest but were unable to secure a seat.
