Preparation beats persuasion.

Most business owners think funding is won during the application.

It isn’t.

By the time a lender sees a funding request, much of the outcome may already have been determined by the quality of the preparation behind it.

A strong business can still struggle to secure funding if the story is unclear, the structure does not make sense, or obvious questions have not been addressed.

The businesses that secure funding most successfully tend to do something differently.

They remove uncertainty before the lender has to ask.

They understand the requirement.

They explain the purpose clearly.

They anticipate the questions.

They address the risks.

And they present the opportunity properly.

Because when a lender can quickly understand the business, the requirement and the rationale behind it, the conversation changes.

Preparation becomes persuasion.

And that can make all the difference between simply applying for finance and being genuinely ready for it.

Borrow Better.

What if the biggest challenge your business faces next… is success?

We naturally prepare for things going wrong.

A customer pays late.
Costs increase.
Sales slow down.
Something unexpected happens.

But there’s another scenario businesses need to prepare for.

What if things go better than planned?

You win your biggest contract.

Orders increase.

You need more stock, more people, more equipment or more vehicles.

All good news.

Except those costs often need paying before the additional revenue reaches your bank account.

That’s the part of growth that can catch even good businesses out.

Growth doesn’t just generate cash. It consumes it too.

And the faster a business grows, the more important the right funding structure can become.

Finance shouldn’t simply be there to solve problems.

Used properly, it can give a business the capacity to make the most of success when it arrives.

Because when your business takes off, the finance should already be there to support you.

What would happen to your cashflow if your sales suddenly increased by 50%?

Most businesses arrange finance too late.

Not because they’ve done anything wrong.

Because, naturally, they start looking for funding when they actually need it.

But after decades in finance, I’ve seen the same pattern time and again:

The strongest borrowers start the conversation before they need the money.

Why?

Because urgency changes everything.

It can reduce the number of lenders available.

It can weaken your negotiating position.

And, sometimes, it can mean accepting terms you wouldn’t have chosen if you’d had more time.

Whether it’s an acquisition, property transaction, investment or simply preparing for the next stage of growth, having funding options available before the opportunity arrives can make a significant difference.

Because good finance isn’t just about accessing money.

It’s about having choices.

And the best time to arrange finance is rarely when you need it.

It’s when you still have the time and the power to choose.

Two businesses can borrow exactly the same amount of money — and achieve completely different outcomes.

Why?

Because finance is only part of the equation.

The structure matters.

The lender matters.

The timing matters.

The flexibility matters.

And, most importantly, the outcome you’re trying to achieve matters.

After many years in finance, I’ve seen borrowers secure exactly the facility they asked for — only to discover later that it wasn’t really what they needed.

I’ve also seen businesses take a different route, sometimes at a higher headline cost, and achieve a significantly better commercial outcome.

That’s why I believe the conversation should rarely begin with:

“What’s the cheapest finance available?”

A better question is:

“What’s the best structure for what I’m trying to achieve?”

Because finance is not the destination.

It’s simply part of the journey.

ASN Video 5 – Why One Lender Says No And Another Says Yes

A lender decline doesn’t always mean your business, property or proposal isn’t fundable.

More often than not, it means it wasn’t the right fit for that particular lender.

Every lender has its own lending appetite, priorities and approach to risk. That’s why the same opportunity can receive very different decisions depending on who is assessing it.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is business owners assuming a single “no” means every lender will say the same.

In reality, the objective should never be to find just any lender.

It’s to find the right lender for you.

That’s where experience, judgement and understanding today’s lending market can make all the difference.

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. Have you ever seen the same funding opportunity receive completely different decisions from different lenders?

ASN Video 4 | The Question Every Lender Asks First

Most business owners assume lenders start by looking at turnover, profit or credit score.

They don't.

The first question every lender asks is far simpler:

"How do we get our money back?"

That isn't because lenders expect businesses to fail.

It's because every lending decision is based on understanding and managing risk.

The clearer your repayment strategy, the easier it is for a lender to understand the opportunity.

I've seen businesses with impressive financial performance declined because they couldn't clearly explain the exit.

I've also seen more complex funding requirements approved because the repayment strategy gave the lender confidence.

Successful funding isn't just about presenting good financial information.

It's about removing uncertainty before the lender has to ask the question.

Understanding how lenders think can transform the way you prepare a funding application and often improve the outcome.

Episode 3 | The Aftersales Network

The Cheapest Finance Isn’t Always the Best Finance

When discussing finance, the interest rate often becomes the headline.

But the headline rarely tells the whole story.

A lower rate means very little if the funding arrives too late, creates unnecessary cashflow pressure, limits your flexibility or simply isn’t structured to help you achieve the outcome you’re looking for.

That’s why experienced business owners don’t judge finance solely by what it costs.

They judge it by what it enables them to achieve.

The question shouldn’t be:

“What’s the cheapest finance available?”

It should be:

“Which funding structure gives me the best chance of success?”

The cheapest finance isn’t always the best finance.

The right funding structure can make you a fortune.

The wrong one can cost you one.

Episode 2 | The Aftersales Network

Why Good Businesses Get Declined For Finance

One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is that a profitable business will automatically qualify for finance.

After more than 40 years in financial services, I’ve seen many strong businesses declined—not because they weren’t successful, but because the funding proposition wasn’t presented in the way a lender needed to see it.

Understanding how lenders assess risk can make the difference between a declined application and a successful funding outcome.

In this second episode of The Aftersales Network, I share why profitability is only part of the story—and why confidence is often the deciding factor.
