Most business owners are brilliant at their craft and quietly winging the money side. πŸ˜…

Quick test. How many of these can you honestly tick?

βœ… Your business money lives in its own account, not tangled up with your personal spending.
βœ… You know your runway: how many months you'd last if the money stopped tomorrow.
βœ… Your tax sits in a separate pot, not hiding in the current account pretending to be profit.
βœ… You've actually checked what your card and account fees cost you in the last year.
βœ… Any spare cash is earning interest, not sleeping at 0%.
βœ… You know whether your account is FSCS protected, or just an e-money app.
βœ… You'd verify a supplier's "new bank details" by phone before paying a penny.

Tick five or more and you're ahead of most. Tick fewer than three and that isn't a failing, it's just your highest-return job this week, because none of these need an accountant, only an afternoon.

Business Expert exists for exactly this stuff, the boring money admin that quietly decides who thrives.

How many did you tick, honestly?

Six in ten UK businesses don't survive their fifth birthday. 😳

It's the stat people quote to talk you out of starting. And it's true. ONS data shows only around 4 in 10 businesses make it to year five.

But here's what nobody adds, and it changes the whole picture.

Closing is not the same as failing. Most businesses that "die" in the statistics didn't collapse. The founder retired, sold up, merged, or simply chose to stop. Of the hundreds of thousands that close each year, only a small fraction actually go insolvent.

So the real failure rate is far lower than the scary headline suggests. Most exits are decisions, not disasters.

The businesses that do genuinely fail rarely run out of customers, they run out of cash.

That's the number to guard. Watch your runway, ring-fence your tax, get paid faster, and you sidestep the one thing that actually turns a good business into a statistic.

Does that number scare you, or does the reframe change how you read it?

A "no" from your bank is not a "no" from the market. πŸšͺ

It feels like a verdict on your business. It isn't. It's one lender, one risk model, one day.

And it's not even the main door any more. Challenger and specialist banks now provide 60% of SME lending, and more than two-thirds of it comes from outside the big high-street banks. πŸ‘€

Different lenders say yes to different things. The application your bank rejects is often exactly what another lender was built for.

One tip from Business Expert: before you re-apply, find out why you were declined, then match that reason to the right lender. Don't scattergun ten applications at once, because a pile of credit searches can hurt you.

When your bank last said no, did you stop, or did you keep looking?

Most "card" payments in Britain aren't really card payments any more. They're a tap. πŸ“²

In 2024, 61% of all UK card payments were contactless. 93% of the cards in your customers' pockets already are. πŸ‘†

The lesson isn't about tech. Contactless won by killing friction. Every extra second between "I want this" and "it's paid" costs you sales, and people abandon friction without ever telling you.

One nugget from Business Expert: the Β£100 contactless cap only applies to physical cards. Apple Pay and Google Pay aren't capped. So if you take card but not mobile wallets, you're adding friction on your biggest sales.

Where's the "chip-and-PIN moment" still hiding in your business?

Cash now makes up under 10% of all UK payments. Barely a decade ago it was nearly half. πŸ‘€

Today more than nine in ten payments are card, contactless or phone. πŸ’³
That's not just a fun fact. It's a quiet deadline for any business still treating card as optional, adding a "card surcharge," or nodding customers toward a cashpoint down the road.

Here's the bit Business Expert would flag: the customer who pulls out their phone to pay and can't, usually doesn't trek to the cash machine. They just leave, and they don't come back. Every payment method you don't accept is a group of customers you quietly turn away.

None of this means going fully cashless. Around 1.2 million people still rely mainly on cash, and turning them away is a choice too. The point is simpler: in 2026, how people can pay you is part of whether they buy from you at all.

Can your customers pay you every way they'd actually want to?

Need to borrow for your business? Your first instinct is probably your own bank. New numbers say that instinct is now the minority move. πŸ“Š

The British Business Bank's latest figures are out, and they quietly rewrite where small businesses actually get money. Challenger and specialist banks now provide 60% of SME bank lending, up from 39% in 2012. Add in non-bank lenders and more than two-thirds of it now comes from outside the traditional high street. 🏦

So the high street is now the minority lender to British small business, and most owners haven't caught up.

Why it matters, from Business Expert: if you only ask the bank you happen to bank with, you're shopping in less than half the market. A "no" from your high street bank isn't a "no" from the market. It's one door in a much bigger building.

Challenger banks, specialist lenders and non-bank finance often say yes where the high street says no, and they price it differently too.

The lending market got bigger and more competitive last year. Genuinely good news, but only if you actually shop it.

Last time you needed finance, did you compare, or just ask your own bank?

"Our bank details have changed." 😐

Four ordinary words, sitting in an email that looks exactly like every other one from a supplier you've paid a hundred times. Same logo. Same sign-off. New account number.

So you pay it. Work carries on. Then three weeks later the real supplier asks where their money is, and you realise it was never them who emailed. πŸ’Έ

This is invoice redirection fraud, and it hunts businesses on purpose, because businesses move large sums to new accounts all the time and rarely think twice.

Here's the habit Business Expert would put in every business tomorrow: when a supplier's bank details change, verify by phone, on a number you already had, before you pay a penny. Not the number in the email. The scammer wrote that one too.

It feels over-cautious right up until the day it saves you five figures. One call. Every time.

Have you ever had one of these land, and did you spot it in time?

Most owners can tell you their revenue. Far fewer can tell you the five numbers that actually decide whether the business survives. πŸ“Š

Revenue is the vanity number. These are the ones that keep you trading.

At Business Expert we've watched plenty of "busy, growing" companies fold because nobody was watching these five. And none of them need an accountant to understand.

Swipe through, then be honest with yourself: how many could you say off the top of your head? πŸ‘‡

You can be profitable and still lie awake wondering how you'll cover payroll. 😳

It's the most confusing thing about running a business. The numbers say you're winning. The bank balance says you're sinking. And both are telling the truth.

At Business Expert we see it constantly: good businesses caught short, not because they aren't making money, but because profit and cash are two completely different things.

Swipe through for why the gap opens up, and the three moves that close it. πŸ‘‡

Which of the three is hurting you most right now?

Myth: the money in your business account is protected like a bank's. 🧨

For a lot of popular business accounts, that isn't quite true, and most owners have never been told the difference.

Here's the thing Business Expert wants every owner to know: not every "account" is a bank account. Some are run by e-money or payment firms rather than banks. They can be slick, modern and genuinely brilliant to use. But they sit under different rules.

If it's a bank, your money is FSCS protected. If the bank fails, you're covered by the government-backed scheme, quickly and up to the limit.

If it's an e-money account, your money is safeguarded instead. The firm has to keep your funds separate and protected, but there's no FSCS guarantee, and clawing it back if the firm collapses can be slower and less certain.

Neither is "bad." Millions run their business on e-money accounts perfectly happily. The point is simply this: know which one you've got, because the safety net is different, and most people only find out which when something has already gone wrong. πŸ”

Two minutes today: open your account's terms and search for "FSCS" or "e-money."

Did you know which type your business account is?
