Ethiopia is driving Africa's electric revolution! ⚡️

In a powerful move to boost its economy and protect the environment, Ethiopia has become the first country globally to ban the import of gas-powered cars. This bold 100% EV plan is not just a vision; it's a reality, with over 100,000 electric vehicles already on the road.

This is powered by a strategic combination of policies:
✅ Ban on ICE vehicle imports since January 2024.
✅ Ambitious goal to replace 95% of fuel cars with EVs by 2030.
✅ Tax incentives that make EVs more affordable.
✅ A growing local manufacturing base and charging infrastructure.
✅ Leveraging the country's nearly 100% hydropower-generated, low-cost electricity.

This transformation is creating major opportunities. Asoko Insight is partnering with TDB to support companies that are contributing to this and other vital projects in the region.

Ready to make a difference? If you have a project in healthcare, climate change, or sustainable development, we want to hear from you.

Imagine a world where critical medical supplies can reach any patient, anywhere, in minutes. In parts of Africa, that's already a reality thanks to companies like Zipline. 🚁

Using autonomous drones, Zipline delivers ⛑️ blood, vaccines, and other essential medical products to remote hospitals and clinics in countries like Rwanda and Ghana. Their work has been instrumental in reducing maternal mortality by overcoming geographical barriers to care.

This is the power of private sector innovation in action—creating real impact and contributing to sustainable development goals.

Inspired? If your company is also working on impactful projects, Asoko Insight working with the Trade and Development Bank (TDB) can help you secure the funding you need. We're offering competitive, long-term investment for projects in healthcare, climate, and infrastructure.

While other fin-tech and consumer tech may grab headlines, powerful business model innovations are quietly reshaping healthcare. Investors who think the industry is stagnant should look closer.

A prime example is the "Hardware-as-a-Service" (HaaS) model has been transposed from tech and is emerging in the medical diagnostics sphere. Instead of multi-million dollar upfront costs for MRI or CT scanners, a pay-per-use model is converting massive capital expenditures (CapEx) into manageable operational ones (OpEx). This is already active in Ghana, South Africa and Nigeria.

This shift is a game-changer, lowering barriers to advanced care and proving the entire sector is ripe for disruption. It’s a clear signal of the tangible, investable opportunities available in HealthTech right now.

Africa’s urban populations are growing fast. So is waste.
➡️ Without action, annual waste will triple in the next 30 years. ➡️➡️The circular economy isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a survival strategy. ➡️➡️➡️ It means better food systems. Sustainable mining. Low-carbon infrastructure.

We've seen the benefits of structured funding for health care. But integration is critical, for instance, only about one third of primary care facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa have reliable electricity. And half have access to clean water—both essential for operating and maintaining many health technologies.

Fortunately TDB Deal Rooms are supporting change across the entire ecosystem:

Rwanda has been a stand-out in increasing life expectancy. There the Mutuelles de Santé (Community-Based Health Insurance) scheme covers over 90% of the population, ensuring broad access to services and creating a reliable demand that can support both public and private providers.

Systemically a study focusing on West Africa between 1995 and 2019 found that of funding: out-of-pocket (OOP) spending was found to negatively affect Healthy Life Expectancy (HLE), whereas government health spending and, significantly, prepaid private health spending per person demonstrated positive short-term effects on HLE in both the host country and adjacent countries.

Not only providing healthier population but a sound foundations for investment in healthcare facilities.
