We’re proud to share this article from Economy Magazine, covering the upcoming launch of SCALA — a €50M Growth Fund in formation, targeting undervalued Italian SMEs with €1–3M EBITDA and €10–20M in revenue. These are companies often “off the radar” for traditional private equity and venture capital firms.

SCALA is being launched by KOBO Ventures, in collaboration with us, Kobo Funds, and founded by Alessandro Tosi, Claudio Vaccaro, and Lars Spannenburg. The fund will focus on minority stakes and deliver hands-on operational support, combining capital, technology, and ex*****on expertise to accelerate growth and international expansion.

This fund represents a new approach to long-term investing in the real economy — supporting high-potential SMEs that form the backbone of Italy’s industrial and innovation landscape.

📊 The Hidden Gem: Italian SMEs Present a Unique Investment Opportunity

🔍 The numbers tell the story:

•221K SMEs in Italy
•130K with €1-3M EBITDA
•6.5K with validated product-market fit

Despite being Italy's economic backbone, these companies face two critical challenges:

1️⃣ Lack of capital access
2️⃣ Missing entrepreneurial know-how for growth (tech innovation, internationalisation, M&A strategy)

The small-cap segment is "off the radar" - creating a massive opportunity for focused investors.

SCALA is a €50M Growth Fund in formation, targeting undervalued Italian SMEs with €1–3M EBITDA and €10–20M in revenue — companies that are “off the radar” for traditional PE and VC firms. It is being launched by Kobo Ventures in collaboration with us, Kobo Funds, and founded by Alessandro Tosi, Claudio Vaccaro, and Lars Spannenburg. The fund plans to take minority stakes and provide hands-on operational support. With average ticket sizes of €5M and a target IRR of 25%+, SCALA aims for 3–6 year exits in tech-enabled B2B and B2B2C companies. The investment advisory team combines entrepreneurial and financial expertise to pursue VC-like returns with PE-level risk mitigation and accelerated exit timelines.

🚀 Announcing SCALA – A Growth Equity Fund in formation for Italian SMEs

Born from the collaboration between financial professionals with billions in assets under management and serial entrepreneurs who've built and scaled small-cap companies.

SCALA aims to bridge the gap between VC and PE, targeting Italy’s overlooked growth-stage SMEs with €1–3M EBITDA and €10–20M in revenue – businesses too mature for VC but not large enough for traditional PE.

✨ What sets SCALA apart: A growth equity strategy combining capital and hands-on operational support for Italian SMEs with proven product-market fit and international growth potential.

Currently in the fundraising phase, SCALA is building a community of partners who believe in a smarter, more agile approach to private capital in Italy.

🔊 Transforming how the world hears — starting with the modern workplace.

Metasonixx Ltd is addressing one of the most persistent challenges in today’s open offices: noise. Traditional soundproofing often isn’t enough — especially as urban density increases and sustainable technologies like heat pumps become more common.

This spin-out from the University of Sussex and University of Bristol is developing advanced, non-electronic acoustic solutions that manage both noise and airflow — supporting well-being, productivity, and net zero goals.

Metasonixx is currently raising £1M in a Seed round, open until July 2025, on the Kobo Funds decentralised investment banking platform.

🚀 Big news for the Italian SME ecosystem!

KOBO Ventures has announced the launch of SCALA, a new private equity fund designed to accelerate the growth of high-potential Italian small and medium-sized enterprises (PMI). With a target of €50 million, SCALA will not only invest in promising businesses but also offer strategic and operational support to help them scale — especially through innovation and technology.

Launched in partnership with a leading Swiss wealth management group and in collaboration with Kobo Funds , SCALA will focus on:

🔹 Micro-enterprises with EBITDA between €1-3M
🔹 A "buy and hold" strategy
🔹 70% allocation to private equity, 30% to listed companies (including equities and debt instruments)

What makes this initiative exciting is its entrepreneurial DNA: led by Alessandro Tosi, Claudio Vaccaro, and Lars Spannenburg — experienced founders and investors who understand the real needs of growing businesses.

💬 “Italian SMEs don’t just need capital — they need competence and strategic guidance, especially to embrace innovation,” says Alessandro Tosi. And we couldn’t agree more.

The initiative also signals a growing interest from international investors in Italy’s small cap segment, recognising its strong potential and more favourable risk-return profile compared to early-stage VC.

This is more than a fund — it’s a bold step toward unlocking the real value of Italy’s entrepreneurial fabric.
