Watches of Switzerland shares jump 20% this morning at first trading, trading is actually ahead of last year and that is quote something considering the global retail industry!

"Revenue in the first 10 weeks of the second quarter rose 18%, or by 20% in constant currency terms year on year to £202.7m. New product launches have also been stronger than anticipated with a positive influence on sales, the company said."

Our our view is that the Luxury Watch industry will continue to thrive and it is a pattern we are noticing at our sister company 'Chase Hattan Watches'

It has been some time since we've witnessed such an increased interest in million pound properties but it appears that a number of people are ready to swap their city apartments for more space and comfort.

Sales activity in the £1m+ property market is storming ahead according to Rightmove, as wealthier buyers prioritise space and leafier locations Houses over £1m are selling 18 days faster than this time last year – the fastest pace since 2014. Seriously, is it any wonder that our high streets are dying! The playing field needs to be levelled, not sure what the answer is but when profits rise by over 35% taxes paid should not be rising by 3%.

That £293 Million in taxes includes what Amazon say are "direct taxes" including employer’s National Insurance, business rates, stamp duty and corporation tax. This is on a turnover in the UK of £13.7 billion (trying to get a true idea of the profit is not so easy).

Yes they are investing in the UK and providing jobs but there is a responsibility to pay appropriates taxes too!

Thoughts?

Amazon’s key UK business paid just 3% more tax last year when profits rose by more than a third as the online retailer benefited from the switch to home shopping. The group’s warehouse and logistics operation, which employs more than two-thirds of its 30,000-plus UK workforce, Amazon UK Services...

It's certainly one view!

Not sure its quite as extreme as that but how long will business large and small be able to carry on in Major cities reliant on the working population to make their business viable. From major hospitality companies to the small retailers its hard to see how they can go on in their current form without the footfall in Cities.

The desertion of the capital, as more than two-thirds of Britain's office workers continue to work remotely, is starving Young's Central London pubs of revenue.

Could this be the saviour of M&S? In the news today for cutting back a further 7,000 jobs although suggesting there will be new jobs in different areas.

Have M&S finally realised they can move staff around the store from food to clothing? With the link up with Ocado providing online shopping and the price cuts to bring them in line with the major supermarket players be enough?

Our view is 'Yes' and it may be the time to look at the share price of both M&S and Ocado but and its a big but ... its not without risk

In a significant strategic shift from its memorable TV campaigns of the past, M&S will this week attempt to win over shoppers by focusing on its competitive prices for basic foods.

Is this the end of the Square Mile, City and Canary Wharf as we know it?

The local bars, restaurants, sandwich shops, tailors and general retailers will start to feel the pinch with many not looking likely to reopen!

Further down the line how does this effect areas like Canary Wharf with many of the residential tower blocks built to house the office workers and the schools to educate their kids along with surgery's, bars, supermarkets etc.

As someone that has had an office there for almost 10 years and coming in since June the reduction in the 120,000 workers in Canary Wharf to what is now thought be 10 - 15,000 workers is clear to see and i'm afraid to say it looks like it is here to stay. How long before the corporations figure they do not need the huge expense of an office. This effects local government and state owned companies as well in terms of taxes and transport income.

Its a whole lifestyle change for good or bad is it ever going to be as it was?

Thousands of staff at one of the Big Four accountancy firms will never return to the office on a full-time basis, its boss has said.

Inspirational and a true example to other companies and directors, there are loads and loads of good stories told by staff from this company and i hear them all the time.

Could not agree more with 'Probably one of the most forward thinking and socially conscious companies in existence'

Maybe the company, its founders and management will rightly be recognised some time soon?

Certainly something similar we are witnessing first hand at Chase Hattan Watches, and although we are predominantly an online retailer its encouraging to see one aspect of the retail sector with a 'bricks and mortar' operation coming out of this lockdown with momentum building... (would be interesting to know what brands are pushing the sales)

Certainly a very interesting read and theory, will we one day have a global currency used by all the major economic forces around the globe?

"[In 2018], Americans, Japanese, Europeans, and people in many other rich countries, and some relatively poor ones will probably be paying for their shopping with the same currency. Prices will be quoted not in dollars, yen or D-marks but in, let’s say, the phoenix. The phoenix will be favoured by...
