As 2019 ends and I reflect on the last 12 months, certain thoughts come starkly into focus Bizarrely it was an incident a few days ago that got me thinking. Around 8 am one morning, I drew back the curtains on the patio doors onto the back garden. What I saw in that instant was a life story encapsulated in a split second. [ 570 more words ]

I was taught some harsh lessons from my garden pond this winter. Lessons which will give you some food for thought this festive season.

Who remembers the great Tina Turner hit from 1984? I certainly do as I was still in Uni cultivating my mullet hairstyle. But look again at the title of this piece. I’m not talking about love. Are you sharing your story? Sometimes I think to myself what on earth can I write about this month, and just when I think I have nothing to say, I realize that can’t ever really be true. In all our lives, each one of us has a story and amazing stories to tell. We may not always appreciate but I can assure you it’s true. [ 506 more words ]

Anyone who knows me understands that I am a really calm, easy-going placid sort of a guy. It takes an awful lot of provocation to get me really riled. In fact, even when I’m riled, you probably wouldn’t notice it from my outward appearance. Like many blokes, we tend to keep our emotions in check, or under control. I actually feel that in my case this is an… [ 793 more words ]

David vs Goliath?

David vs Goliath?

There are many examples of David vs Goliath in our lives. How the little man and woman standing tall against the behemoth, fighting the good fight, seeking balance and fairness, and redressing inequality.

Ok, I know the names are a bit the 1950s’ (no offense guys), but you get my point. How do you see your life? Through rose tinted spectacles, or is there’s a permanent rain cloud over your head and good things never happen to you. It’s the old glass half full/half empty scenario. Me? Well, I’m more optimist than doom-monger. I always… [ 576 more words ]

I’ve been writing this newsletter now since 2015 and if you’ve followed me all that time, first I’d like to thank you. Secondly, you know I’m a stoical sort of guy. If you look up the dictionary definition of the word ‘stoical’ you’ll get something along the lines of ‘enduring pain and hardship without showing one’s feelings or emotions’. Whilst this is true of me to a degree, it’s not what Stoicism really is about. [ 617 more words ]

It’s birthday season once again in the Lazarus household. April 26th (my wife Soli), May 1st (my daughter Rosie), 2nd May (yours truly), and 4th May (my son David). A year older, but are we are a year wiser? I’m going to get all melancholy for a moment and suggest to you that whilst birthdays are a lovely way to celebrate with family and friends, they are just another day on the calendar.
