We closed London Climate Action Week with a thought-provoking conversation on the ocean economy and its potential to create sustainable livelihoods and quality jobs for young people.

Hosted by Nalini Tarakeshwar, Global Head of Standard Chartered Foundation and Corporate Philanthropy, the discussion brought together Desmond Kuek, Executive Director and CEO of Temasek Trust; Patricia Zurita, Executive Director and Chief External Affairs Officer of Conservation International; and Dr Serge Raemaekers, Founder of ABALOBI.

The conversation explored how the ocean economy underpins lives and livelihoods around the world - supporting food security, driving economic opportunity and sustaining millions of people. A clear theme emerged: if we are to build a more sustainable blue economy, young people must be at its centre, with access to the skills, opportunities and quality jobs they need to thrive.

No single organisation can address challenges of this scale alone. That is why Standard Chartered Foundation is working collaboratively across philanthropy, conservation, business and finance to accelerate solutions that protect our oceans while creating inclusive economic opportunities for future generations.

The link between sport and opportunity is clear.

Girls who stay in sport are more likely to build confidence, stay in education and go on to leadership roles - yet by age 14, they are dropping out at twice the rate of boys.

This is not an awareness issue. It’s a systems issue.

This was a central theme in discussions at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, where our Group Chief Operating Officer Tanuj Kapilashrami joined partners from UN Women, Liverpool FC, the IWG Women & Sport and F1 ACADEMY, including Susie Wolff. The discussion also featured F1 presenter Naomi Schiff Racing.

As we look at this challenge across our markets, the global insight is consistent: girls are not choosing to leave sport - they are being pushed out by systems that are not designed for them to stay. Barriers range from access and safety to social norms and practical constraints.

Campaigns can raise awareness, but lasting change requires sustained action - with businesses, sporting organisations, policymakers and communities working together to remove structural barriers.

At Standard Chartered, this belief underpins our approach. Through initiatives such as our Goal Accelerator Programme, Play On with Liverpool Football Club and our partnership with F1 ACADEMY, we are focused on creating access, building confidence and opening pathways to opportunity.

We see a significant opportunity to build on this through a partnership with UN Women - bringing together complementary expertise to accelerate progress in keeping girls in sport and unlocking wider outcomes.

Because the challenge - and the opportunity - is the same across sport and work: designing systems that enable people to succeed.

If we are serious about change, the focus must shift from awareness to action, and from short-term campaigns to long-term commitment.

What if the answers to some of the biggest challenges surrounding nature are already all around us?

That question sits at the heart of How to Live on Earth, a new documentary film presented by Benedict Cumberbatch. Standard Chartered is proud to sponsor the film's premiere, which takes place this week as part of London Climate Action Week.

Described as the ultimate “how-to” guide for humanity, the film takes viewers around the world to meet the innovators, communities and changemakers working with nature to build climate resilience, strengthen ecosystems and support sustainable development.

At Standard Chartered, we're committed to supporting global efforts to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030 by managing nature-related risks across our business and by helping to mobilise capital through innovative financing solutions that can close the nature funding gap. One example is our recent Sustainability-Linked Loan for Côte d’Ivoire, which linked financing terms to clear sustainability performance targets focused on preventing deforestation and supporting reforestation efforts.

We reaffirmed that commitment earlier this week at The Royal Foundation’s United for Wildlife Forum, where our Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) Marisa Drew announced an enhanced role on the refreshed United for Wildlife Taskforce Steering Committee, alongside the launch of a dedicated partnership between our Financial Crime & Compliance team and the CSO organisation, bringing together complementary expertise to help tackle wildlife crime.

As this latest film reminds us, nature loss is a global challenge that requires collaboration across sectors, disciplines and borders. We're proud to play our part.

The Standard Chartered Women's International Network (SC WIN) Now & Next Programme continues to support women-led businesses across the Greater Bay Area and India - connecting founders to financing, expertise and global networks to help them scale.

Since its launch in 2022, SC WIN has supported over 4,500 women-owned businesses across seven markets. To date, it has extended more than USD540m in financing and is on track to meet the Bank’s commitment of USD1bn in financing for women entrepreneurs by 2028.

We're celebrating how running connects communities across our markets.

Last month the Standard Chartered Shanghai 10km Run took place along the Huangpu River. Highlights from the event included:

- 4,500 participants
- 100+ financial institutions represented
- An inclusive run supported by four local community partners
- Participation from four World Marathon Majors Seven Star Finishers, with one securing first place and a spot at next year’s Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon.
