Kamala Harris will consider Gary Peters for the presidential nomination
According to a new Axios article, Kamala Harris is reportedly considering Michigan Senator Gary Peters as her running mate in 2024.
The news outlet said the push to consider Peters comes primarily from labor unions, and the addition of the Michigan senator could strengthen Harris' position in the battleground state.
Axios said Peters is interested in taking the position and is currently trying to drum up support from his Democratic colleagues for a potential vice presidential run.
What does Gary Peters think about cryptocurrency?
According to Stand With Crypto, a nonprofit political advocacy group, Peters is “strongly opposed to cryptocurrencies.” The nonprofit noted the senator's involvement in the Digital Asset Money Laundering Act of 2023, but also cited his support for repealing SAB-121, a provision that would require banks holding digital assets on behalf of their customers to report those assets as liabilities on their balance sheets.
The Money Laundering Act of 2023 dealt with restricting the use of cryptocurrency for alleged terrorist financing. At the time the law was passed, Peters wrote a letter to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan asking him to address the issue:
“Given the clear and present danger posed by the funding of these and other militant organizations, we request that the Administration provide additional information on its plan to prevent the use of cryptocurrency to fund terrorism.”
Kamala Harris has so far had little to say about her crypto position
While cryptocurrencies have been in the national spotlight and have become a political campaign topic, Kamala Harris has remained largely silent on future policy decisions regarding digital assets under a potential Harris administration.
Entrepreneur Mark Cuban voiced reasons for optimism, saying Harris is “much more open” to business and innovation than is widely perceived by the voting public, while Riot Platforms CEO Jason Les expressed doubt that Harris would deviate from the Biden administration's current policies.
Meanwhile, Democrats in Congress wrote Harris a letter urging her to abandon the Democratic Party's hostility to cryptocurrencies and engage in a dialog with the digital asset industry.
