AI may not yet be reshaping the macroeconomy, but it could still shift the balance between growth and who benefits from it. In their paper, our colleagues Panashe Bera and Gregory Bond identify two underappreciated risks: a modern-day Engels' Pause, where productivity gains flow disproportionately to capital owners, leaving consumer-driven economies vulnerable to weak demand; and a capex boom-and-bust, as AI investment outpaces demand in a pattern uncomfortably reminiscent of 2001.

Applying Nobel Laureate William Nordhaus's diagnostic framework to a decade of new data, their findings are clear: productivity is not accelerating, but the distributional and investment risks are very much real.

How have markets historically responded to geopolitical conflicts? Henry Neville, Portfolio Manager at Man Group, examined nearly 40 conflicts since WWII. He found that equities have tended to sell off initially but then recovered in many cases within six months while gold has historically been among the more consistent hedges during those periods. However when faced with a world war, a lasting energy shock, or a deeper crisis lurking underneath, these periods have proven to be notable exceptions and sources of instability.

We're opening our Sofia office for an inaugural AI Hackathon, inviting developers, data scientists, and machine learning engineers from the local community to tackle a single question: can AI build a better portfolio?

Participants will work in teams within a dedicated simulation environment, applying artificial intelligence to curated financial datasets. Man Group technologists and a portfolio ,manager will be on hand throughout the day to provide guidance on predictive modelling, risk analytics, and algorithmic logic.

Our last London Hackathon brought together over 65 external engineers and data scientists to contribute to nine open-source projects, including work with non-profit partners. This year, we're directing that collaborative focus toward AI and investment management.
