Remember the queues for free SIMs in 2016? ๐ถ
That turned into one of India's biggest businesses. Today Jio earns nearly โน1.5 lakh crore a year, and its opened this morning.
Here's how the "free" plan actually made money:
๐ถ Step 1: Give it away. Jio's data and calls were free from launch in September 2016 until March 31, 2017.
๐ Step 2: Grow fast. Jio said it reached 100 million customers in just 170 days.
๐ Step 3: Make it a habit. Once your bank OTPs, WhatsApp and family calls were on a Jio SIM, few people switched.
๐ Step 4: Raise prices slowly. Jio's average earnings per customer rose from โน181.7 a month in FY24 to โน215.6 in the June 2026 quarter. With over 53 crore customers, small increases add up to huge money.
๐ฐ The result: โน1,46,885 crore in revenue in FY26, and an IPO valuing the company at about โน10 lakh crore.
The money lesson for all of us: "free" is usually a marketing cost. Someone pays later. The same idea is behind free trials, zero-fee credit cards and "no-cost" EMIs.
