Sunflower seeds are high in healthy fats, mostly polyunsaturated and some monounsaturated fats, which are known to have anti-inflammatory effects in the body. They are also rich in antioxidants, namely vitamin E and selenium. These antioxidants protect your body against damage from free radicals which over the long term can result in chronic disease. Additionally, sunflower seeds contain polyphenols such as flavonoids which also act as antioxidants and are beneficial in fending off oxidative stress and chronic conditions.

Improving life expectancy, age-related disease patterns and patients increased expectations of a better quality of life into old age is dramatically changing healthcare as it stands.

These expectations have manifested in the development of specialist non-invasive surgical solutions (TAVI) to treat Aortic valve stenosis, a serious heart condition, that affects approximately 15% of over 75-year-olds in the UK.

In the UK, NHS England are about to commission centres to deliver services that will treat a leaking mitral valve (MR) via a non-surgical, vascular route. Transcatheter MV repair is in its infancy but the technological advances and innovation in the last 5 years have made this possible. It is very likely that the transcatheter MV repair will transform heart valve replacement just as TAVI has done.

In a particularly exciting development, Dr Jayarajah’s unit at Plymouth University Hospital will be introducing the transcatheter MV repair as a service, towards the end of this year. We are thrilled to have welcomed Dr Jayarajah to our team to share his experience and skills.

Our diverse portfolio covers themes through all sectors of sustainability and human health. We invest in early stage, British based companies that fall under these two pillars. We are focused on identifying companies who have created transformative solutions to the world’s most pressing and complex problems. These companies should have the potential for strong recurring revenue and globally scalable models. We will not consider investments outside our two pillars.

COP26 Summit began on Sunday in Glasgow and is undeniably a defining moment in the fight against the climate crisis. It is crucial that the world leaders attending this summit commit to decisive action in order to limit global warming to 1.5C to avoid a climate catastrophe.

Just this week the UN reported that the world is still on track for 2.7C of warming by the century's end and it is, therefore, crucial that the summit accelerates new deals to phase out coal and the use of other fossil fuels in exchange for renewable energy.

It is imperative now for leaders to "increase energy efficiency, insulate homes and electrify road transport which will inevitably require large-scale financing by the public and private sectors working in concert." (https://www.ft.com/)

At Two Magnolias, we are passionate about being a part of the change needed to safeguard the planet, its inhabitants and its future through thoughtful investment in the sustainability space. Find out more in this video.

Dan Morrell, Two Magnolias advisory board member, has developed a system that he has coined the 'Low Hanging Fruit' solutions to reduce global C02 emissions. These range from changes to traditional agriculture and industry to the need for change in the political and legal spheres.

One area of particular importance is the promotion of forests and biodiversity, as "by planting over trillion-plus trees globally we could reabsorb 20% of our greenhouse gas emissions." However, trees are not only important and relevant in relation to our emissions as "50-70,000 species of trees are utilised for medicines which protect human health." - Dan Morrell

At Two Magnolias, we are passionate about protecting biodiversity and promoting the planting of trees, both for their environmental benefit and for the role they play in human health. We are therefore delighted to have Dan on our advisory board given his passion and experience working in the climate space.

The recent fuel crisis in the United Kingdom has been at the forefront of the national consciousness over the last few weeks, with the shortages opening up channels for conversations about more sustainable and clean sources of energy.

Companies specialising in sustainable power, many of which are VC-backed, have thrived over the last few years as the UK's Big Six suppliers have seen their market share diminish. This year has already seen a record amount of corporate and VC capital pouring into UK clean-tech companies totalling over $1.2 million across 139 deals. (Source Pitchbook.com)

At Two Magnolias, we are passionate about finding more sustainable energy alternatives that benefit both the planet and the people living on it. We are delighted to have people like Mark Meyrick on our advisory board adding to our decision-making process with his multiple years of experience in the green energy space.
