UK GDP unexpectedly contracted in October, highlighting fresh signs of economic weakness just as markets were expecting modest growth.

Despite the slowdown, investor sentiment was more nuanced. Bond markets remained relatively stable, the CBI upgraded future growth forecasts, and equity markets saw a rotation away from technology stocks towards cyclical and value names.

This week’s Market Commentary looks at the impact of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Budget, a major moment that combined significant tax rises with new spending commitments.

Despite calmer market reactions — with the FTSE 100 and gilt markets moving higher — business confidence took a sharp downturn, and investment intentions fell to pandemic-era lows. Meanwhile, US equities rallied strongly on renewed expectations of a December Federal Reserve rate cut.

A softer UK economy and rising unemployment have pushed expectations for a December Bank of England rate cut to their highest level yet. Forecast easing in inflation later this week could strengthen the case even further.

The government has also backed away from raising income tax, opting instead to extend the freeze on tax thresholds — a move that rattled gilt markets and added new uncertainty ahead of the November Budget next week.

Elsewhere, US markets were mixed as the Federal Reserve struck a more cautious tone, while UK housing activity weakened as buyers and sellers paused ahead of potential tax changes.
