Used my phone to tip today, and it was kind of awesome. Who could’ve imagined anything like it just 20 years ago – the tech went all the way from a dial-up modem to tipping without ever touching the money. Jules Verne would’ve wept with joy. I love good coffee, but I really hate to have change jingling around in my pocket when I pick it up. Might be why baristas are undertipped - believe me, I know, used to work as one myself. So this time I just scanned a code and landed right on my barista’s page. Quick payment processing, and my “thank you” was on its way. Really loved how smoothly it works.

That tip jar on our bar counter has been there since my Dad was in charge, perhaps even since his Dad was. Right now it’s become just a part of the decoration. There’s a QR code on the jar so that any customer can tip the barman whatever they like. We went with iTips where you only pay for tip processing—no setup or subscription fees. A cool feature worth mentioning is the option to pool all tips together or split them to “personalise” the rewards. We’ve been using iTips for three month in our bar, and a single disadvantage is still to see!)

I travel lightly and a lot, mostly for work, living between several countries, so I made it a habit not to accumulate stuff, only passports :)) I almost never carry cash around, and my cards are mostly virtual which is safer and also more convenient.

Paying well for service, I expect it to be good in return. I’m a firm believer in people doing their jobs well, be it a nail artist, barista, massage therapist or Pilates instructor. Here’s a simple example: I love white clothes, like really stark white, and I hate it when I get them from laundry and they’re suddenly greyish, and then they tell me “yeah what did you expect, things don’t stay white forever”.

So I got my crisp white shirts back from the laundry yesterday and they were so white it almost hurt to look at, and that plastic bag they came in had an iTips QR code on it. Super simple, pointed the phone camera at it, got the tipping/feedback page, sent a tip to these nice people.

That’s how it should be: everyone proud of what they’re doing, no matter if they make apps or launder shirts. The iTips service was a cherry on top for me, all nice and clean and working like you expect it to. Perfect aftertaste!

"Oh come on, please find a way to take my money!” – A personal drama about trying to tip, in three acts.
I spent an hour in a charming, tiny cafe. It only had two tables, plus the one outside that they have to move aside each time a scooter passes along carrying fresh bread rolls from the bakery next door. But boy can they cook… like they’re angels who came down from heaven and brought their favorite food with them. No words can describe that apple pie bathed in foam of whipped cream… and the cappuccino! It’s Cloud Nine in my cup. Pure gastronomic delight.

Finally, I get my bill: a tiny, adorable thing that looks like it was hand-sewn on a cloth napkin. Relaxed and still in heaven, I ask: “Could you put the tip on the bill? I’d like to pay with a card.” The waiter beams at me, “Sure thing!”, brings a payment terminal, and… nothing happens. Then, nothing happens about a dozen times more; the terminal does not work. I sigh as I reach for my purse, and then turn beet red as I realise I barely have enough cash to pay the bill—but not leave a tip. I ask if there’s an ATM.

“It’s just around the corner, but it was gutted by a running bull last week,” – comes an embarrassed reply. “We go to the neighbouring village, but we can’t take you right now, I’m so sorry, the dough has risen, it’s time to bake the buns.”
I suddenly remember something and grab at the last straw.
“Wait, but you do have this sticker here, the one saying ‘Get the app and leave a tip’, with a faded Internet address…”

The waiter’s face turns into a mask of despair. I install the app which instantly freezes. Update, rinse, repeat, nope, frozen again. Finally, I get it to launch and enter an amount that covers both my endless rivers of coffee with apple pie shores and the tip. Error. Again. Transaction failed.

“You are not the first,” says my waiter. “How much are you short?”
“Not that much, half a cup of coffee,” I mumble.
“It’s okay, I’ll just strike the last cup off the bill. Why don’t you leave a review with that laptop of yours? Perhaps our owner would finally replace that tipping service.”

Should that QR code go on the leaves of the giant lobby ficus plant? As a hair tattoo on the waiter’s temple? Printed on your best boxing coach’s gloves? iTips works with any surface that works for you. Don’t be afraid to be creative, try things out, and we’ll help you figure out what works best.
If you made your customer smile, and then offered them a handy tool of expressing their gratitude, it’s 100% success.

QR Codes on your staff's uniform enables your customers to leave feedback, and a code on a fitness instructor’s T-shirt offers a quick way of booking the next session. You could as well add your social media links to gain new followers!

Play around with your codes, entertain your guests while they wait: Place your QR codes on the squares of a board game printed on the disposable paper tablecloth or display animated codes on little screens embedded into the tables; use every chance to immerse your guests into your values and atmosphere.

Just remember that the QR code is more than just a sticker! And even if it is just a sticker, it can be displayed on any surface and any texture. Be bold, and those digital tips will surely find their heroes!

Splitting and pooling tips: Short iTips guide for restaurant owners

It is easy to configure iTips to either transfer individual tips or split the money among your team in any way that works best for you. The individual tips are a simple matter, the “collective tip jar” however can be handled in several ways. The tip pooling policy makes sure every group of restaurant employees—including back of the house staff such as cooks and dishwashers—benefits from tip pooling arrangements. What is the difference between tip pooling and tip sharing? Tip sharing is entirely voluntary and does not carry the same mandatory guidelines as tip pooling does: a certain share of collected tips is split between non-tipped employees. There are several options of tip splitting and tip pooling that can be set by the manager, such as:
▫️Split based on hours worked;
▫️Points system;
▫️Percentage tip-out;

Split based on hours worked
Some restaurants split tips based on how many hours an employee worked. Since there are both full-time and part-time servers, it wouldn’t be fair to those who worked a full shift to split tips with those who only worked the dinner rush. In this model, the total amount of tips is added up, then divided by the total hours worked. The result is then multiplied by the hours an individual server worked.

Points system
A points system is an effective way for a manager to pool 20–100% of the servers’ tips and fairly split them amongst all employees, including bussers, bartenders, hostesses, and everyone else who keeps the restaurant service running smoothly. This method also ensures that no one has a particularly terrible shift.

Percentage tip-out
Another form of tip splitting, where servers use the honour system. A restaurant tip-out structure includes tipping the support staff based on a percentage of the tips they earned. Each of the supporting service roles is assigned a percentage of the total tips. Usually, the percentage split would be 10% to the bartender and another 25–30% shared among the remaining employees.

Regardless of the method, it’s important to make sure you stay on top of the process—and iTips makes sure you do!

The QR code you want

A QR code made of champagne splashes for a bar, one made of flame tongues for a hot pizza delivery service, powerful muscles making up the QR code for a trendy fitness club. Forget the boring standard codes everyone has grown sick and tired of during the pandemic. Everything about your business needs to be top-notch, including your QR code for the iTips digital tipping service.

For our customers, we create custom QR visualisation to match the interior of your venue and work for you: a QR code is a functional feature that must scan at first try. Designers often forget about this, placing codes on glaring or curved surfaces. Our QR codes not only catch the eye; they also work. At the same time, these codes blend in perfectly with your interior decoration… which is how it should be, right?

We fall in love with a service… through our eyes.

That’s right, it’s quite like a romantic relationship: the first sight is the most important. Imagine: you’ve arrived at your hotel from the airport, probably sleep-deprived, and all you care about is getting to your room, shower and bed. No, you don’t need help with your luggage, and you sure as heck don’t want to learn about nearby attractions.

You can’t wait to come inside and kick off your shoes, and once you are in your room, it’s immediately apparent that it’s exactly what you needed: perfectly made beds, clean air, fresh towels in the bathroom. A bottle of water and a fruit plate on the table—a compliment from the hotel. And right next to that, a little card with a QR code: “Welcome, have a pleasant stay. Your room was prepared by Maria. You can leave your feedback or a small consideration using this code if you like.” This is when even the most tired guest who had no desire to talk to anyone will probably leave a review—and a tip.

Carefully placed little reminders, like breadcrumbs, lead the guest to the point where they’d be ready to be grateful. This often works better than a meaningful look from the hotel porter who lingers in the room waiting for a tip. Today’s guests and customers value their comfort and personal space. This indirect contact via a QR code quite often works as well as personal contact with the attendants. Both the service and the tipping must happen seamlessly.

QR code on your beer or cappuccino foam? Sure, as soon as the technology is there! For now though, we just design creative QR codes for our clients, so that their guests smile when they see one – and scan it easily, too.

There are no limitations as to where such codes can be placed. Your staff can even have a tattoo with your QR code if they want to; however, there are less provocative ways of integrating the iTips digital tipping codes into your venue’s interior, creating a short and customer journey from service to payment and feedback.

Depending on the specifics of your business, iTips provides custom QR codes with original tailored design: from giveaway plectrums in your music store to stickers for the free apples on your fitness club’s counter. There are options for hotel and cafe owners as well, obviously.
