"At some point, you realise this is the future."
After years of careful saving and investing, one Pinnacle client made a decision that transformed his son's future.
John gifted £100,000 towards his son Tom's first home, bringing an end to years of renting and the uncertainty that came with it. Watching those pressures take their toll on Tom's mental health, he reached the point where he urgently wanted to step in.
As he put it:
"There's no point being the richest person in the cemetery."
The decision was emotional, yes, but it wasn't impulsive.
Years of financial planning with his adviser, together with Pinnacle LifePlan's cashflow forecasting, gave John the confidence to understand the true impact that gift would have on his own financial security. In reality, it made very little difference, only reducing the inheritance he had always intended for his son anyway. The bigger question was: how much of that inheritance could potentially be lost to HMRC under the new rules?
The decision also formed part of a wider inheritance tax strategy, taking into account the changes coming into effect from April 2027.
These changes mean most unused pension funds will become subject to inheritance tax for many estates. It raises the question of whether, for some families, it makes both emotional and tax-efficient sense to pass on wealth during their lifetime rather than waiting until after death, particularly where gifts may fall outside the estate if the relevant inheritance tax rules are met.
John's story shows how careful forward planning and ongoing financial advice can give people the confidence to change their family's future.
