Whisky terms of the month: Racked and Palletised
Racked storage, is a more established and increasingly popular system in which casks are laid horizontally in rows, typically stacked up to ten or twelve levels. This method supports stability and structured organisation, while allowing for relatively easy access to individual casks for sampling or inspection. Racked warehousing is often favoured for its balance of tradition and modern efficiency.
In palletised storage, casks are positioned upright on pallets and can be stacked up to ten high. This method offers logistical efficiency, allowing casks to be easily moved and organised using forklifts. It is a space saving solution, particularly suited to high volume warehouses. However, the long term impact of this approach on whisky maturation is still under ongoing study.
Both methods reflect evolving priorities within the whisky industry, from maximising storage capacity to preserving the quality and character of the spirit over time.
