investors should be prepared to lose all their money, of England governor says

Cryptocurrencies “have no intrinsic value” and people who invest in them should be prepared to lose all their money, Bank of England (BOE) Governor Andrew Bailey said Thursday.

Digital currencies like bitcoin, ether and even dogecoin have been on a tear this year, reminding some investors of the 2017 crypto bubble in which bitcoin blasted toward $20,000, only to sink as low as $3,122 a year later.

Asked at a press conference about the rising value of cryptocurrencies on Thursday, Bailey said: “They have no intrinsic value. That doesn’t mean to say people don’t put value on them, because they can have extrinsic value. But they have no intrinsic value.”

For the first time, customers of some U.S. banks will soon be able to buy, hold and sell bitcoin through their existing accounts, according to crypto custody firm NYDIG.

Banks are asking for bitcoin because they can see their customers sending dollars to Coinbase and other crypto exchanges, according to Yan Zhao, president of NYDIG.

After rolling out the initial bitcoin product, NYDIG plans on other services, including debit card rewards paid in bitcoin and a new type of bank account that is FDIC insured, but pays interest in bitcoin, he said.

As investor interest in cryptocurrency spikes, bitcoin could rise to $1 million over the next five years, one expert told Yahoo Finance Live.

“Bitcoin is going to $1 million a coin,” CoinDesk Learn Editor Ollie Leech said. “I actually believe that it will, at some stage, with just the scarcity aspect alone, it makes it an incredibly exciting asset to hold... Bitcoin is uncontested.”

Bounces Back to $55K as Yellen Backtracks on Rate Hike Comment

Bitcoin (BTC) has regained poise on Wednesday after U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen toned down comments suggesting interest rate hikes may be needed to stop the economy from overheating.

“It’s not something I’m predicting or recommending,” Yellen clarified during an online event hosted by The Wall Street Journal late on Tuesday, downplaying remarks made earlier in the day.

“If anyone appreciates the independence of the Federal Reserve, I think that person is me,” added the former Fed chief, according to a Bloomberg report Wednesday.

Bitcoin found a floor near $53,000 after Yellen’s clarification and was trading back above $55,400 at press time, representing a nearly 4% gain on the day.

A former financial regulator says the United States needs to step up its research into a central bank-issued digital currency, as the Federal Reserve explores the viability of a digital dollar.

Christopher Giancarlo, who ran the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as its chairman from 2017 to 2019, is working with consulting firm Accenture on pilot programs that will test different use cases for a digital dollar in the United States.

“What’s not being done, and what needs to be done, is to look at the sociological, the commercial, the practical implications of this,” Giancarlo told Yahoo Finance on Monday.

“That’s where we think we can help at the Digital Dollar Project: to do some of that experimentation.”

Will replace as the ultimate store of wealth?

There are some uncanny similarities between Bitcoin and gold.

Like gold, Bitcoin is rare. The total supply has been limited to 21 million tokens. And the pace at which the tokens are released periodically is slowed, so that the final coin won't be minted until around 2140.

As a result, it becomes increasingly more difficult and more expensive to "mine" new Bitcoin. That has raised concerns about the impact on the environment, where the computing power required to "mint" new coins chews through enormous amounts of energy.
