Working from home? When did you last check your home insurance? 🏠💻

For many of us, working from home is now completely routine. But if the way you use your home has changed, it's worth checking whether your insurance has kept up.

Things your insurer may need to know about can include:
💻 Expensive business equipment
📦 Stock or business goods kept at home
👥 Clients or other business visitors coming to the property
🏠 Using part of your home primarily for business purposes

Some equipment may be covered under your home insurance, while other risks may require separate business cover. It depends on your circumstances and your policy.

If you're not sure what's covered, it's much better to find out now than when you need to make a claim.

Choosing an insurance broker isn't just about finding the cheapest premium.

Price will always be important, but what happens after you buy the policy matters just as much.

⏺️ Will your broker take the time to understand your business?
⏺️ Will they challenge your thinking when necessary?
⏺️ Will they support you through a claim and help you adapt as your risks change?

For our latest article, we asked members of Team RG what they believe makes a genuinely good insurance broker. Despite different roles and decades of combined experience, the same themes came up time and again: trust, honesty, expertise and long-term relationships.

If you're choosing a broker, these are the qualities worth looking for.

🔑 Who has keys to your home?

It's a simple question, but one that's worth thinking about from time to time.

Over the years, it's easy to lose track of who might still have access to your property. Previous owners, tradespeople, cleaners, dog walkers, neighbours or even a spare key left in a key safe could all form part of the picture.

While having trusted people with access can be convenient, it's worth reviewing your home security every now and again, particularly if you've recently moved house or had work carried out.

Ask yourself:
• Do you know exactly who has a key to your home?
• Have any keys been lost or never returned?
• Is your key safe still secure and being used appropriately?

A few simple checks can help improve your home's security and give you greater peace of mind.

📄 Could one contract clause change your business risk?

Contracts in the construction and lift industries are becoming increasingly complex. A single clause can sometimes introduce responsibilities or liabilities that weren't originally anticipated.

Before signing any agreement, it's worth considering:
• Are you taking on any design responsibilities?
• Could scope creep increase your obligations during the project?
• Have delay penalties, indemnities and liabilities been clearly understood?

Taking time to review contracts before work begins can help avoid costly disputes further down the line.

Contract reviews are just one part of building a more resilient business. Our recent article explores eight of the biggest risks facing construction and lift companies in 2026, and the practical steps businesses can take to stay ahead.

🚲 Are your most valuable belongings covered when you take them out of the house?

From e-bikes and road bikes to golf clubs, cameras and jewellery, many of us own items worth far more than we realise.

A common misconception is that home contents insurance automatically covers everything, wherever you take it. In reality, that's not always the case.

Depending on your policy, you may need additional cover for valuable possessions, particularly if you regularly take them away from home or own high-value items that exceed your policy limits.

It's worth checking:
• Whether your most valuable items are adequately insured
• If they're covered away from home
• Whether individual items need to be specified on your policy

A quick review now could help avoid unexpected surprises if you ever need to make a claim.

🏡 If you'd like to review your home insurance or check your cover for valuable possessions, our Personal Lines Team is here to help.

🚚 Is your business protected while goods are on the move?

Whether you're delivering products to customers, transporting equipment between sites or sending valuable items to suppliers, there's one question worth asking:

What happens if they're lost, stolen or damaged in transit?

Many businesses assume their standard insurance provides this protection, but that's not always the case. Goods in Transit insurance is designed to protect the items you're carrying, helping to minimise financial losses if the unexpected happens.

It's worth reviewing your cover if you:
• Deliver goods to customers
• Transport tools, equipment or stock
• Use your own vehicles or third-party couriers
• Carry high-value or specialist items

Every business is different, so it's important to make sure your cover reflects the way you operate.

🚛 If you'd like to review your current arrangements or discuss whether Goods in Transit cover is right for your business, our specialist Commercial Team is here to help.

🏡 The longer the ground stays dry, the greater the risk of subsidence.

Much of southern England has now experienced one of its driest spells on record. July brought just 1.9 mm of rain to parts of the South East, making it the driest July since records began in 1836, with some areas seeing more than 35 consecutive days without meaningful rainfall.

When the ground becomes extremely dry, clay soils can shrink, causing movement beneath buildings. While not every property is at risk, prolonged dry weather can increase the likelihood of subsidence, particularly in areas with clay soil or large trees close to the property.

Some common signs to look out for include:
• New or widening cracks in walls
• Doors or windows that suddenly become difficult to open
• Sloping floors or gaps appearing around windows and doors

If you notice any of these signs, it's important not to ignore them. Early investigation can help prevent more significant damage.

If you'd like to understand more about subsidence, the warning signs to look for and what to do if you're concerned, our guide explains everything you need to know.

💎 Have your valuables increased in value since you last reviewed your insurance?
Many of us insure our homes and contents, then simply allow the policy to renew year after year.

📈 But values change.

⌚ Watches
💍 Jewellery
🎨 Collectibles and artwork

Over time, some possessions may increase significantly in value, meaning the amount they're insured for may no longer reflect what they'd cost to replace today.

It's also worth thinking about any valuable items you've acquired since your policy was first arranged. Have they been added to your cover? Do they exceed any single-item limits?

A regular insurance review can help ensure your policy continues to reflect both your home and the possessions that matter most.

At Robert Gerrard, we provide tailored home insurance solutions designed around your individual circumstances.

🏡 If it's been a while since you reviewed your cover, our Personal Lines Team would be happy to help.

👥 Running a business means making decisions every day. But what happens if one of those decisions is challenged?

Whether it's an allegation of wrongful dismissal, a regulatory investigation or a claim relating to the way your business has been managed, the financial and legal consequences can be significant, even if you've done nothing wrong.

That's where Management Liability insurance comes in.

Rather than protecting physical assets, it helps safeguard the people responsible for running your business, as well as the business itself. Depending on the cover selected, it can include protection for directors and officers, employment-related claims and certain legal liabilities faced by the company.

As your business grows, so do your responsibilities. Taking time to review whether your existing cover reflects those responsibilities is a sensible step.

At Robert Gerrard, we take the time to understand your business and recommend insurance that's tailored to the way you operate.

📞 If you'd like to discuss whether Management Liability insurance is appropriate for your business, our Commercial Team is here to help.

Beyond health and safety: What else should construction and lift businesses be thinking about?

When people talk about risk in construction, health and safety is often the first thing that comes to mind.

And rightly so.

But today's business risks are much broader than they were just a few years ago.

Contracts are becoming more complex. Regulations continue to evolve. Supply chains remain under pressure. Cyber threats are growing, and skills shortages continue to challenge businesses across the sector.

The organisations building the greatest resilience aren't simply reacting to these changes. They're taking a step back, looking at the bigger picture and planning ahead.

In our latest article, we explore eight business risks construction and lift companies should have on their radar in 2026, along with practical questions to help you assess how prepared your own business is.
