As investors, we mustn’t get blown every which way by an endlessly changing news flow.

Everybody has their opinion on what is happening and what might happen. Nobody has a crystal ball, so nobody knows what is coming, and that includes all the self-proclaimed experts, the guys who forecast the last five bear markets and even the guys with billions in the bank. The future is a mystery.

Charts don’t predict the future, nothing does, though I sometimes think that Coppock comes close, but they give us a clue by telling us what is happening to momentum now.

At some point, if US stock markets continue to decline, we will need to study Coppock for its infallible clues to when bear markets end, but not yet.

My gut feeling is that the US stock markets are vulnerable. Any unexpected shock could trigger a rush for the exits. I think we should take precautionary action. Trying to sell into a collapsing stock market is a nightmare.

What are your thoughts on the US stock market?

Did you know that Apple will be coming up to spending a trillion dollars on buying back it’s only share. Only in the American stock market, would this happen!

My two favourite benchmark stocks, Nvidia and Palantir Technologies, are behaving encouragingly. NVIDIA has a buy signal, and Palantir has a sell signal, but it is refusing to fall further. On the contrary, in terms of classic Japanese candlestick chart analysis, the price action looks bullish.

Short seller Michael Burry, who is believed to be short both these shares, says privately quoted Anthropic will eat Palantir’s lunch, but the chart suggests that it won’t happen. Instead, we have a classic bunching of the moving averages. If they start to break higher, there could be fireworks.

What is fast becoming my third benchmark favourite, SanDisk, continues to display explosive price action. I know opinions don’t mean much, but my opinion, for what it is worth, is that all three shares are appealing speculative buys right now.

Will you be investing in any of these shares?

For a decade, between 2012 and 2022, software company Adobe Inc. ruled the world, but not any more. OpenAI launched its first version of ChatGPT in November 2022. Adobe shares peaked at almost $700 in that same month. The shares are $237.63, and the chart has looked increasingly threatening since early 2024.

I can see what is happening. We have been using a subscription service called iStock for images for years, but we have just failed to renew our subscription because Google’s Gemini can do what iStock does, and it is free and much better.

This is a brutal day of reckoning for many software companies, and a moment of historic opportunity for the companies creating the hardware and supplying the energy that feeds the AI revolution. It turns out that ChatGPT was one of the most incredible ‘black swan events’ ever to hit the US stock market.

Investors usually fall into two categories: long-term buy-and-hold investors, who behave like owners of the business and day traders who have no loyalty whatsoever. I am interested in another strategy, which is long-term trading. The aim is to hold the shares through periods of positive price action and step aside at other times. This may not be as profitable as buy-and-hold with top performers, but it can be easier to handle for investors who are freaked out by significant declines.

This strategy will not work, and indeed, no strategy will work with a share that is spending years, even decades, trading sideways. The company must be successful; the more successful, the better. For example, Applovin has exciting fundamentals and is growing so fast that many investors are sceptical of the performance, the story and the prospects. You believe, or you don’t.

I am trying to think outside the box. Instead of focusing on buy signals, I want to emphasise sell signals.

The point of the sell signals is not so much to take profits as to step aside during a period of high risk for the share price, release funds for other opportunities, and be ready to repurchase the stock on whichever buy signal strategy you are following.

My strategy is simple. If the fundamentals are great, and all the moving averages are rising, it makes sense to hold the shares. If your chosen moving average is falling, you should step aside.

I increasingly feel that waiting for buy signals before buying will (a) make sense for many investors and (b) allow us to have an exit strategy. This is the long-term trading approach. Buy on a long-term buy signal and sell on a long-term sell signal.

Will you be using this strategy?

I’ve recently shared my strategy for the Vertiv stocks based on the signals I’m seeing in the charts.

The signals for Vertiv have been buy, sell, buy, sell, buy and finally buy more. Currently, you would be holding the shares. The fundamentals are exciting. Buy and hold would work well with this share or dollar cost averaging. If you are trading shares, it might be best to do this in a spread betting account to avoid tax problems.

Is Vertiv in your portfolio?

The charts for the Meta share price encapsulate the uncertainty in the US market. All the moving averages are declining. It seems unthinkable that this share could break down from here, turning all the trading over the last 15 months into a top area, but sometimes the unthinkable happens.

What could that unthinkable thing be? Many things. AI is starting to impact corporate America in unpredictable ways. The world is drifting into a war which seems to be spreading. Oil and natural gas supplies are at risk of falling sharply. And the future is always a bit of a mystery.

In contrast, my two favourite bellwether stocks, Nvidia and Palantir, have both given yellow sell signals but are holding their ground rather than falling. Nvidia has been tracking sideways for nearly nine months, so a big move may be coming.

Keep checking the charts and looking for those buy, sell and hold signals.

Which stocks are you buying and selling at the moment or are you holding your nerve?

The meteoric rise of artificial intelligence, which once propelled markets to record highs, has hit a wall of scepticism.

In early February 2026, a sharp sell-off rippled through global exchanges as the narrative shifted from “AI as a saviour” to “AI as a disruptor.”

This volatility was primarily driven by two factors: a massive spike in capital expenditure by tech giants that has yet to yield commensurate returns, and the release of highly specialised AI agents capable of automating complex professional tasks.

Investors are no longer just asking who will build the AI, but rather who will be “cannibalised” by it.

Which shares do you think are vulnerable and which are going to stay the course?
