NIGERIA SOVEREIGN CREDIT ANALYTICAL NOTE
Nigeria’s sovereign credit profile reflects the scale and diversification of its economy, supported by improving external liquidity and a progressively strengthened macro-financial policy framework.
The ongoing reform agenda including exchange-rate reform, monetary tightening, fiscal consolidation and efforts to enhance domestic revenue mobilisation has progressively improved the sovereign’s external resilience and policy credibility. Nevertheless, elevated inflation, fiscal rigidity, high debt-servicing costs and continued exposure to oil-price volatility remain material credit considerations.
From a sovereign balance-sheet perspective, Nigeria benefits from its substantial economic scale, sizeable external earnings capacity and improving reserve position. The medium-term credit trajectory will, however, remain closely linked to the government’s ability to broaden the non-oil revenue base, contain inflation, strengthen fiscal ex*****on and maintain adequate external buffers.
Overall, Nigeria’s sovereign credit fundamentals combine significant structural economic capacity with material macro-fiscal constraints, making policy implementation, fiscal consolidation and external liquidity key determinants of its evolving sovereign risk profile.
