I was on LBC Radio with Matt Frei this morning talking about the Budget’s impact on high earners and what I’m actually seeing amongst clients.
One of the points I made: NHS workers are turning down shifts and extra work to stay under £100k if they have nursery-age children. The cliff edge of losing childcare support means that earning more can genuinely leave you worse off, so they’re choosing not to take those extra hours. This affects all of us who need a GP or any kind of NHS support.
Others caught in the £100k–£125k tax trap are doing the same. The effective tax rate makes extra income barely worthwhile, especially if they’re also paying for childcare.
Matt referenced a poll showing that 30% of 18–35 year olds are planning to leave the UK. I’m seeing a bit of that - clients who’ve already moved or are actively planning exits. But I’m also seeing a growing sense of “what’s the point of being here if you’re ambitious?”
In practice, I’m seeing three types of responses:
• Some have left.
• Some are doubling down, working even harder to earn vastly more - yes, they pay more tax, but their net income is still life-changing, and the work we do together helps them make the most of it.
• And some are staying because they have roots, support, and lives built here that aren’t easily replicated elsewhere.
So the real question isn’t just “should I leave?” It’s “can I build the life I want here, and what will that actually take?” I love supporting my clients with this.
What was your take on the Budget?
