When Acorn homeowners Lucy and Michael moved to Longcroft at Cubis Bruton, they left behind an old house with an EPC rating of G. It was full of character, but it came with constant maintenance and very high energy bills.

Their new home is rated EPC A, with solar PV panels, triple-glazed windows and mechanical ventilation heat recovery. Almost a year on, Lucy sums up the difference: "Our new home is warm, efficient and easy to look after, which means we can spend more time enjoying family life rather than worrying about the house."

Where does the rain go once it hits the ground on a new development? It's a question that shapes a lot of what happens before a single home is built.

Sustainable urban drainage systems, or SUDS, are designed to manage rainwater on-site rather than sending it straight into the local sewer network. Permeable paving, swales and attenuation ponds all help slow water down and let it soak away naturally. Rainwater is collected across permeable surfaces, naturally filtered and stored, then slowly released to alleviate the risk of flooding both on-site and in the surrounding area.

It's one of those details that's easy to miss once the homes are finished, but it plays a real part in how a development sits within its landscape.

A Grade II listed building doesn't always stay in the past.

At The Links in Rest Bay, Porthcawl, we transformed a piece of Welsh coastal heritage into homes that respect where they came from while making room for how people live today and the judges agreed.

The Links won 'Residential Development of the Year' at the Cardiff Property Awards a few years back, recognising how the finished scheme reflects its history while delivering genuinely elevated coastal living.

Retaining a structure, rather than demolishing and starting again, avoids a significant amount of the carbon that goes into producing new materials from scratch.

Existing buildings come with their own constraints, structural quirks, materials that need careful handling, layouts that weren't designed with modern living in mind. But working within those constraints often produces homes with a character that's genuinely hard to replicate, alongside a smaller environmental footprint.

It's not the only route to sustainable housing, but it's often one of the most rewarding, for us and for the people who go on to live there.

Newquay is one of the most well-connected towns on the Cornish coast. It has its own airport, a vibrant food and drink scene, world-class surf at Fistral Beach, and a Harbour Festival that brings the town to life every year.
