Your customer's SIM was swapped. Their wallet still looks legitimate.

That's how SIM swap fraud quietly feeds money laundering in mobile money. Compromised or fraudulently reissued SIM cards route funds through wallets that pass checks at the point of transaction. By the time the money reaches a foreign account, the beneficial ownership trail is degraded or gone.

How does your firm confirm that the person using a wallet is the person who registered it?

Bank of America’s $1.2 billion penalty shows how basic anti-money laundering (AML) failures can persist despite internal warnings, exposing even major banks to serious regulatory consequences.

The lessons aren’t only for US banks. They reach banks and payment providers across Africa.

The failures weren’t sophisticated: risk ratings that waited for a subpoena, alert rules that suppressed warning signs, and a sanctions watchlist left out of date for five weeks.

In my latest article, I break down four control lessons for correspondent banks and African respondents, with practical questions every institution should be able to answer.

Introduction Bank of America’s $1.2 billion penalty demonstrates how basic anti-money laundering (AML) failures can persist despite internal warnings, exposing even major banks to serious regulatory consequences. Some of the failures concerned accounts held by the bank’s own foreign branches and...

Are your AML controls designed for how money actually moves today?

Across Africa, mobile money now moves over a trillion dollars a year, through wallets, agents and airtime. But many compliance frameworks were built for wire transfers and correspondent banks.
In my new video I walk through four money laundering typologies reshaping risk in African payment corridors.

This clip covers the first one: smurfing via agent networks. Small deposits are spread across many wallets, then consolidated, so abroad you only see the final transfer.

3 guardrails before agentic AI goes live in AML: regulatory baselines, model risk, data readiness.

Where does an AML analyst's time really go? Mostly on retrieving information: transaction history, customer records, sanctions results, previous alerts. The judgement, the part that needs a human, becomes the smallest part of the job. Agentic AI can reverse that. It gathers the information and assembles the case file, so analysts can spend their time on decisions. The aim isn't to remove the human. It is to make human oversight meaningful again.

Back in June I wrote about agentic AI in AML. Since then, it's become one of the most talked-about topics in compliance, so I've turned it into a video.

For payment firms in African corridors, the question isn't whether to use agentic AI. It's how to use it while staying in control: where it saves analyst time, where it needs guardrails, and what regulators will expect.
