With the Premier League returning this weekend, we thought we’d reflect on one of our favourite football focused events from the past year, The Business of Football.

Bringing together some of the biggest names from the game, including Rick Parry, Jason McAteer and John Barnes, the event explored the business, leadership and future of football, and the huge economic impact the game has on our cities and regions.

As the new Premier League season gets underway, it’s a great reminder that football is about far more than what happens on the pitch.
From investment and regeneration to jobs, tourism and international profile, the business of football continues to play a major role in shaping our economy.

And we’ll be continuing that conversation in September, when we welcome Rick Parry back for another event in Birmingham.

Long before Talking ’Bout Regeneration became an annual fixture in the DIB calendar, Downtown in Business was bringing together business leaders, politicians and property professionals to debate the future of our cities and regions.

This week, we’re reflecting on our 2013 Property & Regeneration Conference – a reminder that the challenges and opportunities surrounding investment, development and regeneration have been central to our conversations for more than a decade.

Fast forward to 2026, and we’re continuing that conversation at Talking ’Bout Regeneration, taking place on 23 September at Crowne Plaza Liverpool.

This morning, Downtown in Business welcomed business leaders, public sector partners and stakeholders to St Helens Town Hall for the first event in our Mersey Power Towns series.

A huge thank you to our keynote speakers, Sean Traynor from St Helens Council and Andrew Devaney from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, and to Jo Henney from Nugent for joining our panel discussion to discuss the regeneration and growth of St Helens.

It was a fantastic conversation exploring the opportunities, investment and partnerships helping to shape the borough's future and drive sustainable economic growth across the Liverpool City Region.

This afternoon, Downtown in Business, in partnership with PLMR, was delighted to host our Devolution 2.0 lunch at Fogo de Chão Birmingham.

With valuable contributions from Kate Trout of the West Midlands Growth Company and Charlotte Johns of Wolverhampton City Council, the discussion explored how devolution has transformed the West Midlands, driving investment, regeneration, skills and economic growth, while considering what further devolved powers could mean for the region’s future.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such a valuable and engaging discussion.
