The Royal British Legion (RBL), sometimes referred to as simply The Legion, is the United Kingdom's leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to those who have served or who are currently serving in the British Armed Forces, and their dependants. We are the Legion's branch in Barwick in Elmet and Scholes, near Leeds, in West Yorkshire.

Today we remember the extraordinary bravery, resilience, and sacrifice of a generation that gave everything for the freedom we enjoy today. As the years pass, the duty falls on us to keep their stories alive. Lest we forget 🌺

A reminder that 2 weeks today we’ll be having our next branch meeting, 7pm on the 16th of June in the Buffers.

Whether you are serving, a veteran, RBL member, keen supporter or just interested please come along.

We intend to make these quite lighthearted affairs where any formalities can be dealt with initially, and the remainder of the time looking at ways to grow and support our branch.

Thank you and see you there,

Alex and Barry

PS, apologies on the AI image, they say a photo gathers more attention than just words…

On this day in May 2009, Operation TELIC formally came to a close.

Operation TELIC began on 19 March 2003, marking the UK’s involvement in the Iraq War.

Over the course of the conflict, 179 British service personnel lost their lives, with many more wounded or affected by their service.

Today, we take a moment to remember all those who served particularly those who did not return, and the families whose lives were changed forever.

We also recognise the lasting physical and mental impact that service in Iraq has had on many veterans.

As a Branch, we remain committed to supporting those who served and continuing the work of remembrance in our communities.

We will remember them.
Lest we forget.

Today marks 81 years since VE Day, the day millions celebrated peace returning to Europe after years of hardship and sacrifice.

It’s a time to remember those who fought, those who waited at home, and the generation who endured so much so we could enjoy the freedoms we have today.

Do you have a family story, memory, medal, or photograph connected to WWII or VE Day? We’d love to hear about it in the comments and keep those memories alive for future generations.

Before we introduce ourselves, we wanted to show our appreciation to Les and Jackie for all that they have done for the Barwick and Scholes Royal British Legion. For over 16 years (hope we've got that correct) Les has been our Chairman, leaves us with huge boots to fill but I'm sure they will both continue to support as best they can for many more years to come...

For the branch to continue and be County supported, it required two people to act as points of contact, who are Alex George and Barry Turnbull.

Alex served in the Army was the Royal Anglian Regiment from 1994 - 2019, and Barry also in the Army with the Royal Artillery from 2000 - 2009. Ironically, Alex was Barry's instructor in training at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate!!

Our next meeting is scheduled for the 16th of June at 7pm in The Buffers in Scholes, and we'd love to see as many of you as possible, whether members of the RBL or not, serving or Veteran it would be great to see how many of us are living locally, and of course try and get more people to join the RBL.

There is nothing formal about the meeting, as we're finding our feet, however it would be great for us all to meet up and share some stories over a drink or two.... see you all there....
