Our Grade 2 listed library was taken over by volunteers in January 2013 and since then it was become a valuable asset to the community. Current opening hours:

Come along to Hardback Cafe this November! ☕📚

Enjoy a lovely cup of tea or coffee, a slice of something delicious and a friendly chat at our community-run library cafe.

Hardback Cafe is run entirely by unpaid volunteers, and the net proceeds help cover the operating costs of the library. So every soup, slice of quiche or panini helps keep our library open and supporting the local community.

We’d love to see you there on one of our Tuesday or Friday openings. Bring a friend and support your community library while enjoying a welcoming cafe atmosphere.

📚 What’s On at Shadwell Library – week commencing 26 October 🎃

Pop in and see us this week! Whether you fancy a browse through the books, a chat over a cuppa or joining in one of our activities, there’s a warm welcome waiting for you.

☕ The Hardback Café is getting into the Halloween spirit! Join us on Tuesday (11am–1.30pm) or Friday (11.30am–2pm) for our Halloween-themed café.

🧶 Our Crafters Group meets on Monday, the library is open at various times throughout the week, and if you’d like to speak to the police? The Police Contact Point will be at Shadwell Library this Thursday, 4–5pm. It’s a chance to raise a concern or have a chat with a police representative – no appointment necessary.

📚 Think you know the story of the Brontës? Think again!

Join Shadwell’s Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association (YCA) for a fascinating talk by Denise Adlard about Branwell Brontë — the often-overlooked brother of Charlotte, Emily and Anne.

Described as “the story of the Brontës that you haven’t heard”, this promises a different perspective on one of Yorkshire’s best-known literary families.

📚 The History of Leeds Grammar School – Tuesday 6 October

Our next talk at Shadwell Library is on Tuesday 6 October at 7.30pm, when Neill Hargreaves will be talking about the history of Leeds Grammar School.

Neill lives locally and has a particular interest in local history. He has also recently researched and produced a history of our own Red Lion pub, so we’re looking forward to hearing what he has to tell us about the long and fascinating history of Leeds Grammar School.

The talk will take place in the Library and booking is essential.

Come and enjoy a cuppa, some homemade cake and a bit of time to browse the books and jigsaws at Shadwell Library. Whether you’re meeting a friend, having a catch-up or just fancy a little treat, we’d love to see you. 😊

📚 What’s On at Shadwell Library this week

A normal week in the Library this week, so we thought we’d take the opportunity to remind you that our lovely community space is also available to hire.

Looking for somewhere local for a meeting, small gathering, club or private event? Our Grade II listed former Methodist chapel makes a cosy and characterful venue, with tables, chairs, kitchen and toilet facilities, and space for up to 35 people.
