When money feels overwhelming, doing nothing can feel like the safest option. But it can often make the worry even bigger.

Financial uncertainty can make us avoid the very things that could help us feel more in control.

So instead of trying to solve everything at once, start small.

Here are a few things you can do today: 👇🏼

✔️ Understand your position
Know what is coming in, going out, what you owe and what you have.

✔️ Choose one priority
Focus on the thing that needs your attention most rather than trying to tackle everything simultaneously.

✔️ Create a regular money check-in
Making it part of your routine can make financial management feel far less daunting.

✔️ Build a financial buffer
Where possible, work towards having 3–6 months' spending available for unexpected situations.

✔️ Talk to someone
You don't have to carry financial worries on your own. Sometimes an outside perspective can help you separate the facts from the fear.

And perhaps most importantly, don't be embarrassed about asking questions.

You don't need to be an expert in pensions, investments, tax or financial planning to start getting your finances in order.

You just need to start the conversation.

Clarity doesn't necessarily come from having all the answers. Sometimes it comes from having a plan.

By the time retirement comes around, it’s not unusual to have collected a small pile of pensions.

One of the questions we’re often asked is: “Should I bring them all together into one pension?”

And the answer? There isn’t a quick yes or no.

Some older pensions can contain valuable benefits that could be lost if they’re transferred, such as:

👉 Guaranteed minimum pensions
👉 Final salary benefits
👉 Protected tax-free cash
👉 Other valuable guarantees or benefits

That’s why bringing pensions together isn’t simply about finding the one with the lowest charges.

Before making any decisions, it’s important to understand the bigger picture:

🔎 What are the charges?
📈 How are they invested?
📊 How have they performed?
🔐 Are there any guarantees or protected benefits that need to be preserved?
🎯 How does each pension fit into the wider retirement plan?

Sometimes consolidating pensions can make sense. Sometimes the best decision is to leave certain pensions exactly where they are.

The important thing is knowing what you have, what it’s doing and what it could mean for your future.

And even pensions that aren’t moved can still form part of an ongoing retirement plan, with their value and potential future income reviewed regularly.

The ideal time to start finding old pension paperwork isn't the week before you retire. 😅

So, when was the last time you added up all your old pensions?

This September, we're supporting the national Pension Attention campaign, helping people take simple steps today to build a better financial future.

This year's theme is "Grow Your Pension".

Like a prize-winning vegetable, your pension doesn't need attention every day, but checking in from time to time can help it flourish.

Three simple things you can do today:

✅ Check your pension savings
✅ Find any lost pensions from previous employers
✅ Understand how much you might need in retirement

Many people lose track of old pension pots when changing jobs, so this is a great opportunity to reconnect with your retirement savings and understand how they're growing.

Take a few minutes to:

👉 Log in to your pension account
👉 Check your contributions
👉 Ensure your personal details are up to date
👉 Review your nominated beneficiaries

Small actions now can make a big difference later.

Today marks a pretty big milestone for Jemima as she heads off for her first day at secondary school!

We’re sure Rob is feeling a little emotional watching his little girl take this next step. They really do grow up far too quickly! ❤️

Although there is one small silver lining… she’s now one step closer to being old enough to potentially join the family business! 😂

Good luck, Jemima! We hope you have the most amazing first day and an even more amazing time ahead. 🎒✨

Here’s to the next chapter!

A financial plan can look perfect on paper… and still not work in real life. 📉

One of the biggest reasons? Not everyone who has a say in the household finances is part of the conversation.

It’s completely normal for couples to have different priorities.

One person might be focused on:
💼 Growing the business
💰 Reaching a particular financial target
🏡 Building more wealth

While the other might be thinking about:
✈️ Travelling more
👨‍👩‍👧 Spending more time with family
🌿 Having the freedom to slow down

Neither perspective is wrong. But if only one person's goals are being planned for, you're not really creating a plan for your shared future.

There are also practical reasons why it's important to look at the whole picture.

You may have different pension pots, different earning histories, different levels of savings and investments, or different ideas about when you want to stop working.

That's why the best financial planning conversations aren't just about "How much do we have?"

They're about:

✔️ What do we both want?
✔️ When do we want it?
✔️ What's important to each of us?
✔️ What compromises might we need to make?
✔️ And what does our financial plan need to look like to support the life we actually want?

You can't plan a shared future around one person's spreadsheet.

So if you're planning your finances as a couple, make sure both of you are part of the conversation.

We recently found a copy of the Financial Times, printed on the exact day Robert Pentelow was born.

Reading the front page felt strangely familiar.

👉🏼 Market volatility.
👉🏼 Inflation worries.
👉🏼 Economic uncertainty.

And, alongside it all, optimism about the next big opportunity.

Nearly half a century later, the headlines may have slightly changed, but the emotions surrounding markets haven't.

It's a useful reminder that markets move in cycles. There will always be something to worry about, and there will always be another reason to believe the next big opportunity is just around the corner.

What matters is keeping sight of the bigger picture.

Time in the market, rather than trying to time the market, is a principle we regularly discuss with our clients.

You can't control the headlines, but you can control how you respond to them.

https://www.pentelow-wealth-management.co.uk/contactWhat does your dream retirement actually look like? 🌅🚐🏡❄️

For some, it’s travelling the world.

For others, it’s a campervan and a few months on the road. Maybe it’s a holiday home, long summers by the coast, winter escapes to the mountains, or simply having the freedom to spend more time with family.

There is no one-size-fits-all retirement.

And that’s why retirement planning needs to start with you.

It’s not simply about asking, “How much is in your pension?”

It’s about understanding:

✔️ When do you want to retire?
✔️ What do you actually want your retirement to look like?
✔️ How much will that lifestyle realistically cost?
✔️ What pensions, savings and investments do you already have?
✔️ Are there other assets or future plans that need to be considered?
✔️ Are you and your partner working towards the same vision?

For couples, this last question can be particularly important.

You may have different pension pots, different earning histories and different ideas about what your future looks like. One person may have taken time away from work to raise a family, while the other continued building their pension.

So looking at one person's finances in isolation rarely gives you the full picture.

Your retirement should be built around the life you actually want to live, and not a generic idea of what retirement is supposed to look like.

And sometimes, the first step is simply sitting down together and asking:

“What do we want our retirement to look like?”

Once you know where you're heading, you can start working out how to get there, and we can help you on that journey.

We all have the benefit of hindsight. And chances are, there are a few things your 21-year-old self could have done differently…

Maybe:

💷 Start saving earlier, even if it’s only a small amount.
📈 Start investing sooner and give your money more time to grow.
💳 Don't spend money just because you have it.
🏡 Don't feel pressured to have everything figured out by 25.
💡 Learn how your money actually works instead of avoiding the things you don't understand.
👵 Start thinking about your pension sooner than you think you need to. Retirement might feel a lifetime away, but time can be one of your biggest financial assets.

And perhaps the biggest one of all:

👉 You don't need to be wealthy to start making good financial decisions.
👉 Small decisions made consistently can have a very different impact when you give them years to build.

So, if you could go back to 21, what would you tell yourself?

👇 We'd love to know yours.

💬 15 years. One client relationship. And a very lovely message.

Some messages mean a little bit more than others. ❤️

This wonderful client has been working with Emma for around 15 years, and receiving a message like this is a lovely reminder of what long-term financial planning is really about.

It isn't just about investments, reports and numbers.

It's about building a relationship, understanding what's important to someone, being there through different stages of life and helping them feel confident about their financial future.

We're incredibly grateful for the trust our clients place in us, and it's particularly special when that relationship grows into genuine friendship along the way.

A huge thank you for such a lovely message, and here's to the next 15 years! 🥂

We’re growing, and we’re looking for two Financial Advisers to join our team in Leeds and Skipton. 💼

People often ask what makes Pentelow Wealth Management different, and a lot of it comes down to the people we get to work alongside every day.

We back each other, celebrate the wins together and genuinely enjoy working as a team. We believe that the way you treat the people around you ultimately shows up in the way you look after your clients, and our advisers do that brilliantly.

Now, we're looking for two new Financial Advisers to become part of that team.

You don't necessarily need to have followed a traditional route into financial services. We're looking for people who:

✔️ Have around 18 months to 2 years' experience working face-to-face with clients or customers
✔️ Are resilient, organised and motivated
✔️ Enjoy building strong relationships
✔️ Are comfortable taking responsibility
✔️ Want to build a long-term career in financial advice

Previous financial services experience is useful, but it isn't essential. Some of the best advisers bring valuable skills, experience and perspectives from completely different industries.

You'll receive structured training through the St. James's Place Academy, followed by ongoing support from the Pentelow team as you develop your knowledge, confidence and career.

As a top 1% St. James's Place practice, our advisers also benefit from additional coaching and mentoring, alongside benefits including private healthcare, a monthly wellbeing allowance and a competitive pension scheme.

If you're looking for more than just your next job and want to build a career where the relationships you build genuinely make a difference, we'd love to hear from you.
