Huw’s News

The new season on New Platt started on 1st March and got off to a flyer.
Despite the weather not being the best, the lake was well attended during the first week with 36 visits made.
Anglers were well rewarded for their efforts with 151 fish taken in that first week, with two fish in the 10lb bracket recorded, one each by Huw O and J Oakes. Huw's fish came on the first day of the season, downhill from here on. There were plenty other fish recorded that were in the 4lb bracket. The 151 fish were made up of 140 rainbows and 11 browns.
Fish were taken from all over the lake though the best returns seemed to come from the shallower areas.
During the week, six returns of 10 or more fish in a day to individual rods were made, topped by 20 fish for Mark C.
Fish fell to a variety of tactics with nymphs, lures and bead heads all scoring.
Next week has mixed weather forecast with heavy rain and strong winds which will no doubt influence attendance
On the plus side, days are drawing out and temperatures are slowly rising. It will still be some time before we can discard a layer or two and look forward to the main fly hatches and rising fish.

Now, I think Huws News is going to be all about this!!

12 > 15 lbs we think (but may be neare to 9!!) either way 31inches, not taken out of water due to size, thanks Huw for show all how to treat large fish.

Huw if you can put a note together on how all of us should handle these magnificent over wintered fish, I’ll post out for all to adhere to.

Well done for the catch, looks like you need a bigger boat.

Huw's news

W/E 3rd Jan

A Happy New Year to all our members.
A very cold week with snow to start giving the fishery a festive look. Margins iced over by the end of the week with over half an inch of ice in front of the jetty. Open water was seen around the islands and to the north of the fishery. Whether the festive period of the weather, no visits were made to the fishery during the week.
with no weekly totals to provide, the summary for the month of December is below.
There were 46 visits during the month resulting in 63 rainbows and 10 browns being reported. The best bag was 11 fish with a number of 3lb fish recorded.
With 2 months left of the current membership year, the running total is 679 visits returning 1190 rainbows, 150 browns, 1 spartic and 4 tigers. The best bag so far is 26 fish with 20+ fish recorded by a few anglers in a number of months. A good number of 4-5lb fish have been caught with fish of 6.25 and 7lb topping the list.
With sub-zero overnight temperatures and daytime temperatures of 3 to 5 degrees for the coming week, it is likely that ice will remain on the water for the foreseeable future.
