💷If you're selling something on Marketplace then beware of this new scam.

🚨Fraudsters are targeting private sales, in particular electronics.

💷They will pay the seller in cash with fake notes. If you're unsure about the notes then refuse the notes.

🚨Don't get caught out.

💷 Check notes carefully before accepting them.
💷keep a screenshot of buyer details.
💷Only meet up in a busy public place.
💷Don't meet up alone.
💷Suggest a bank transfer.

We're asked about fraud and scams every day. If you're worried about fraud on your account then come in and speak with one of our community bankers on selected days.

Banking and phone call scams are among the most common (and costly) in the UK. Here’s how to stay ahead of them without getting paranoid.

📞 Phone call scams (vishing)

🚩 Red flags to watch for

* Someone claims to be from your bank, the police, or HM Revenue and Customs.
* They say there’s urgent fraud on your account and you must act immediately.
* You’re asked to:
* Share PINs, passwords, or one-time codes
* Move money to a “safe account” (this is always a scam)
* The caller may already know some of your details (leaked data or social media).

🛑 What to do instead

* Hang up immediately—don’t argue or engage.
* Wait a few minutes, then call your bank using the number on your card (or from their official website).
* If you’re unsure the line is clear, use a different phone.

👉 Note: Scammers can spoof real phone numbers, so even if it looks like HSBC or Barclays calling, don’t trust it blindly.
