Are You One of the 1.2 Million UK Savers Facing an Unexpected Tax Bill? Here's What to Do Next.
Many fixed-rate savings accounts are now maturing, and while the higher interest rates were certainly welcome, they could also lead to an unexpected surprise: a tax bill!
The Bank of England's interest rate rises have meant that for the first time in a while, a significant number of savers are earning enough interest to exceed their Personal Savings Allowance (PSA). With around 1.2 million fixed-rate accounts maturing this year, it's a very real issue for many households.
What you need to know:
• Personal Savings Allowance (PSA): This is the amount of savings interest you can earn tax-free each tax year.
o Basic rate (20%) taxpayers have a £1,000 PSA. So if you put £20,000 into your bank account at a 5% rate then the interest would be £1,000. PSA gone.
o Higher rate (40%) taxpayers have a £500 PSA.
o Additional rate (45%) taxpayers have no PSA.
• What happens if you exceed it? Any interest earned above your PSA is taxable at your marginal rate of income tax. HMRC will often adjust your tax code or ask you to declare it via Self Assessment.
• Don't forget ISAs! Interest earned within an ISA (Individual Savings Account) is always tax-free, regardless of how much you earn. This makes them an invaluable tool for tax-efficient savings.
Next Steps:
1. Check your statements: See how much interest you've earned on maturing accounts.
2. Understand your PSA: Know your allowance based on your income tax band.
3. Review your options: Consider whether shifting some of your savings into an ISA could be beneficial for the current tax year and beyond.

💰 How Overpayments Can Save You Thousands on Your Mortgage! 🏡
Did you know that making overpayments on your mortgage can cut years off your term and save you thousands in interest? 🤯 Here’s how it works:
🔹 What is an overpayment?
An overpayment is when you pay extra on top of your usual monthly mortgage payment. Most lenders allow you to overpay by up to 10% of your loan balance per year without penalties.
🔹 How much can you save?
Let’s say you have a £200,000 mortgage on a 25-year term with a 4% interest rate. Your monthly payment is around £1,056.
If you overpay just £100 extra per month, you could:
✅ Save over £15,000 in interest
✅ Pay off your mortgage 4 years earlier!
🔹 Why consider overpayments?
✔️ Reduce your loan balance faster
✔️ Pay less interest over time
✔️ Achieve mortgage freedom sooner 🚀
💡 Tip: Always check with your lender if overpayments are allowed without penalties!
Would you overpay on your mortgage if you could? Let us know in the comments! 👇🏡💬
