➡️ Today's local media workers in areas now undergoing conflict face several difficulties reporting from the field, including threats to their safety, securing basic supplies, and navigating a complicated information landscape.

We need to research to raise young people's consciousness of the globalised information and communication culture and make programs designed to help reporters prepare for the difficulties they may encounter in covering conflicts in the future.

Lack of safety and security for local media workers is a significant issue for the media today.

According to a study of media workers who cover local conflicts, the primary worry is that threats to their safety would prevent the public from receiving accurate, first-hand accounts of the events.

The safety of local media workers may be jeopardised due to a lack of coverage of legal elements of international conflict, media techniques, and the utilisation of information from second-hand sources. New norms of engagement for local media operating in war and crisis zones have emerged in the modern era, resulting in less presence and more journalistic coverage based on second-hand observation. 🌎

❗After protests began on September 16 after the morality police jailed a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman for being "improperly dressed," Iranian authorities have increased attacks and violence against journalists.

At least eight journalists have been detained, including the editor of the news website Mokeryan in the city of Bukan in the country's northeast and a daily reporter working for the Shargh, according to RSF's sources. In contrast, many others have been summoned for questioning and threatened.

A total of 14 journalists, as documented by RSF, were detained before September 16, 2022. The size of this rally is reminiscent of the 2019 protests. RSF reports that during the protests in Iran in November of 2019, 23 journalists were detained by the government. 🏛️

📰 Local media workers should take a first aid course recognised in the media, always have a first aid kit, and keep learning how to keep themselves and their sources physically safe.
They should get insurance that covers them in the event of an injury while working.

📍 According to the head of Reporters Without Borders's Eastern Europe and Central Asia desk, JC, the Russian military is deliberately hunting down journalists in occupied territories to disseminate its propaganda and eliminate anybody who might contradict the Kremlin narrative.

Russia tries to export its disinformation bubble to occupied territories by all means necessary. So that the Russian government can be held accountable for crimes against journalists during wartime, RSF keeps track of these incidents.

🗞️ The work of journalists in collaboration with local media workers plays an essential role in war-affected cultures by informing the public on national identity, history, conflict, and peace attempts.

They have a mediating role in conflicts by spreading information and defining, framing, deliberating, and promoting solutions to such disputes. This is why it is such a crucial role to mediate the information during and after times of war. Reporters have severe limitations and problems during the conflict, but shifting from violent to calm situations is just as challenging.

🏛️ The Court of Auditors said the European Union's investment of roughly 50 million euros in policies to combat disinformation between 2015 and 2020 is insufficient. The Court of Auditors is currently debating whether or not the "EU vs. Disinfo" initiative should be merged into the European External Action Service because of the risk that existing criticism may be misconstrued as the official viewpoint of the EU. They also note the need to establish a structure to coordinate reactions to and actions against disinformation, a lack of skilled personnel, long-term funding, an acceptable monitoring and evaluation framework, and effective monitoring and assessment. The Commission set a framework for working with internet platforms by enacting a Code of Practice on disinformation of actions taken. ✅
