Could remortgaging lower your payment?
A lower monthly payment can feel like the obvious measure of a better mortgage. But the real question is wider: what will the mortgage cost you over time?
If your current deal is ending, you may move onto your lender’s Standard Variable Rate. Reviewing your mortgage before that happens could reveal other options. Depending on the lender and product, it may even be possible to arrange a new deal several months in advance.
Remortgaging can also be considered for other reasons, including raising funds for home improvements, consolidating borrowing or helping family with a property deposit. However, reducing the monthly payment does not always mean reducing the total cost. Extending the term or moving other debts onto your mortgage can increase the total amount repaid.
The right mortgage should make sense today without creating a more expensive tomorrow.
A mortgage review can help you compare the payment, term, fees, equity position and wider implications before deciding what comes next.
