What does good rabbit housing look like?
Our understanding of rabbit welfare has evolved. Rabbits are energetic and curious animals who need space to run, hop, stretch, explore, and binky! A small hutch alone doesnβt provide enough room, which can lead to obesity, joint issues, boredom, and stress.
For a pair of rabbits, aim for at least 3m x 2m (10ft x 6ft) of continuous living space, indoors or outdoors, featuring:
πΎ Plenty of room to exercise and explore
π Hiding and sleeping areas
π₯ Food, water, and litter areas
πΎ Toys and enrichment
π A secure, predator-proof environment
π¦οΈ Outdoor shelter from extreme temperatures
A hutch can still be part of an outdoor setup, but it should be a sleeping or hiding space with constant access to a secure run.
This isn't about guilt; it's about evolving to do better for rabbits today. More space means happier, healthier rabbits whose wonderful personalities can truly shine π°β¨
