Maybe it is just me, but it feels like we spend more time communicating than ever before and yet still struggle to get simple answers.

Emails, messages, portals and online forms all have their place. They can be incredibly efficient.

What I find interesting is how often a five-minute phone call achieves more than twenty email exchanges.

There is something about speaking to someone directly that removes misunderstanding and helps decisions move forward. Technology has undoubtedly improved the way we work and rightly so. I am not suggesting we go backwards. I do wonder whether we sometimes overlook the simplest option because it feels old-fashioned.

A quick conversation still solves a surprising number of problems.

Do you prefer email or a phone call when something genuinely needs sorting out?

We seem to be entering a world where almost every business process can be automated.

The question I keep coming back to is this:

As technology gets better at providing answers, does experience become more valuable because it knows which questions to ask?

My thought of the day.

One thing I have noticed over the years is that people rarely regret asking a question.

They often regret not asking it sooner.

We are now more than halfway through the year, which makes it a good time to pause and reflect.

Back in January, many businesses set budgets, goals and plans for the year ahead. Eight months later, reality often looks a little different. New opportunities appear, priorities change and unexpected challenges have a habit of finding their way onto the agenda.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. In business, the ability to adapt is often more valuable than sticking rigidly to a plan that no longer fits.

I find this time of year is useful for asking a few simple questions. What has gone well? What has changed? What needs more attention before the year gathers pace again?

Sometimes a short period of reflection provides more value than rushing straight into the next task.

Something that often gets overlooked is how much the cost of replacing things has changed over the past few years.

Whether it is machinery, vehicles, equipment, stock or buildings, the price of putting things right after a loss is often much higher than many people expect. Materials cost more, labour costs more and repairs can take longer than they once did.

The challenge is that many sums insured and policy limits were set when costs looked very different. If they have not been reviewed for a while, there is a risk they no longer reflect today's reality.

This is not about dramatic changes or scare stories. It is simply a reminder that the world moves on and values should move with it.

A question worth asking is this:
If you had to replace a key asset tomorrow, would the figures you have on file still be accurate?

Artificial intelligence seems to be everywhere at the moment. Every week there is another article about how it will change the way we work, communicate and make decisions.

There is no doubt it has huge potential. It can process information quickly, identify patterns and save time.

What it cannot replace is experience.

Experience provides context. It helps us recognise when something does not quite feel right. It allows us to ask better questions and challenge assumptions. Often, the value is not in knowing the answer immediately but knowing which questions need asking in the first place.

Technology will continue to improve and rightly so. I suspect the businesses that thrive will be the ones that combine technology with judgement, rather than relying on one at the expense of the other.

What are your thoughts? Is experience becoming more important or less important in the age of AI?

Insurers are seeing increasing numbers of fraudulent claims supported by AI generated images and documents. What strikes me is not the scale of the problem but how convincing some of these submissions are becoming.

Technology is moving quickly and it is making many things easier. Unfortunately, it is also giving fraudsters new tools.

The challenge for businesses is that not everything can be taken at face value anymore. Whether it is a document, an image or an email, there is a growing need to slow down, ask questions and verify information before acting on it.
Insurance has always been built on trust but trust works best when it is supported by good processes and healthy scepticism.

As technology evolves, so do the risks. The important thing is making sure our awareness evolves with it.

Its how insurance fraud continues to evolve with insurers reporting record levels of detected fraud and an increase in the use of AI‑generated images and documents.

What is standing out to me was not just the scale of it but how sophisticated it is becoming. It is no longer limited to obvious or poorly put together claims. In many cases, the supporting information now looks entirely credible.

For businesses, that creates a different challenge. It is not only about avoiding fraud but being aware of how convincing some of these situations can be. Processes, checks and internal awareness matter more than they used to.
It also reinforces something we see regularly. Most risks do not stand still. They evolve quietly in the background and it is only when you step back that you notice the change.

Something worth keeping in mind.

So according to estate agents, Savills, around 254,000 buy to let properties came onto the open market in the 12 months to the end of March. As brokers, we have seen so many property owners call it a day. This is so sad to see.

We are all living and trading in tough times and with a Government this bad, it is not likely to improve anytime soon.

The Government appears to have little to no business experience and is doing its best to stifle any entrepreneurism which ultimately filters down and slows the economy as a whole. Time will tell but a change of Government cannot come soon enough.

On the plus side, its a buyers market. If you are looking to expand a portfolio or start one from scratch (don't let the Renters Rights Act put you off), there are good rates to be had. Drop me a line if you would like to discuss in more detail.

The recent hot weather always brings a few of the same issues into focus for businesses.

Things like air conditioning struggling, refrigeration not quite coping, IT equipment running hotter than it should or stock that turns out to be more sensitive than expected. None of it feels dramatic at the time but it can quickly lead to disruption or unexpected cost.

What tends to get overlooked is how this links back to insurance.

Breakdown cover, business interruption and even policy limits sometimes only get tested when something stops working, not when everything is running as it should.

It is often at this point people realise what is and just as importantly, what is not covered.

Like most risks, it is not about extremes. It is the practical, everyday things that catch businesses out.
This weather is a good reminder to ask a simple question:
What would happen if something stopped working tomorrow?
