Consumer Duty is moving from implementation to evidence. That should matter to every business buying insurance.

In plain terms, the standard is outcomes. Did the cover fit the need? was it explained clearly and was the service there when it mattered?

My advice when you renew or place a policy:

• Ask what is excluded, then ask for examples.
• Confirm who does what after the sale: mid term changes, certificates, and claims support.
• Do not buy on headline price alone. The policy that fails at claim stage is never good value.

Good broking is still the old fashioned things done properly: clear advice, proper documentation and being available when something goes wrong.

If you have ever had a claim drag on, you already know why this matters. Get in touch if you want to discuss your requirements.

Recently read an article that reported someone travelled to Thailand for a holiday, while returning home to the UK they fell ill and spent some time in intensive care before passing away. They were only 47. The persons family have been handed a bill for £11,000 only to find there was no travel insurance in place.

As I always say, you do not need insurance until you need insurance.
Sounds silly but its so true. Especially in tragic circumstances like this.

It’s the same for your business. If you want to discuss your current arrangements or have general questions, please make contact.

The Association of British Insurers published figures in February showing that UK insurers paid out a record £6.1 billion in property insurance claims during 2025, driven largely by storms, flooding and other adverse weather events.

This is not headline grabbing news for those working in insurance but it is a helpful reminder for businesses. Weather related disruption is no longer occasional. It is becoming a regular operational challenge, affecting access, premises, supply chains and continuity planning well beyond traditional flood risk areas.

The practical point is not panic, but preparation. Assumptions made a few years ago may no longer hold true. Plans, property protections and insurance arrangements need to reflect how risks are changing now, not how they used to behave.

Being ready does not stop disruption but it does reduce its impact considerably.

The ABI summary is worth a read here:

Insurers paid out £6.1 billion in property claims in 2025, according to the ABI’s latest data - the highest annual total on record¹. In the final quarter alone, payouts reached £1.5 billion, as adverse weather events continued to drive up claims costs.

There has been a noticeable shift in the Directors and Officers landscape and insurers are starting to talk about it more openly. Regulatory scrutiny is increasing, insolvencies remain a concern and new exposures such as technology and governance decisions are placing additional pressure on boards. Allianz and other insurers have commented recently on how board level risk is becoming more complex and more personal (refer to the following article https://buff.ly/GtLl643).

Many directors still assume that company indemnities offer enough protection. In reality, those protections have limits, particularly when a business is under financial stress or when regulators are involved.

I take the view that this is an area where preparation matters. A well structured Directors and Officers policy is not about expecting problems. It is about allowing decision makers to do their jobs with confidence and clarity.

If your Directors and Officers cover has not been reviewed recently, or you do not have any, it is worth a conversation.

Is it just me or have insurers really slowed up this year? We are finding markets really slow and still finding it difficult to get hold of people on the phone. I often wonder how many companies do business?

I am not referring to all insurers, we have seen great improvements in many, with more reaching out with business developers and the like. It really does work - if only all insurers worked like this!

One thing we remind ourselves at Bromwall is that a business is shaped far more by its values than by its products or services. Insurance is what we do, but how we work is defined by something deeper. Values decide how we treat clients, how we solve problems and how we behave when nobody is watching.

For us, it starts with being consistent. Doing things properly. Asking questions until we understand the full picture. Taking responsibility when something needs attention. These habits build trust over time and trust is the strongest asset any business can hold.

Values are not slogans on a wall. They are the small decisions made every day, especially the ones that seem unimportant. When those decisions align with your values, the culture strengthens and clients feel the difference without you needing to say a word.

The days after Easter often have a different pace. The first quarter is behind us and the year begins to settle into a clearer shape. It makes this a good moment for a simple check‑in with your business.

Nothing complicated. Just a honest look at a few quiet questions. Are your processes working as you expect? Has anything changed since January that deserves attention? Are there areas that feel slower, heavier or more exposed than they should be?

These small reviews often reveal more than people think. They highlight the parts of the business that need clarity, better communication or minor adjustment. When addressed early, they prevent larger issues later on.

A short mid‑spring check‑in is never wasted time. It sets the tone for the months ahead and gives you confidence that everything is moving in the right direction.
