Run a shop, café, restaurant, salon, or another qualifying retail, hospitality, or leisure business?

From April 2027, the Small Business Rates Relief thresholds will rise for qualifying properties in England, meaning more businesses could pay no business rates at all.

It’s worth checking how the changes could affect your 2027 costs and budgets.

The National Living Wage will increase to £13.21 per hour, while the rate for 18 to 20-year-olds will rise to £11.27 in April 2027.

For employers, that means more than updating payroll.

Higher wage costs can affect cash flow, pricing and your overall budget, so it pays to plan ahead.

Could large Self Assessment tax payments look a little different in the future?

From April 2029, taxpayers who already make Payments on Account are expected to pay smaller amounts more regularly throughout the year.

That makes it even more useful to track your income, expenses, and likely tax position throughout the year.

Good bookkeeping helps you see what’s coming before a payment is due.

From April 2029, VAT invoices must be issued in a specified electronic format.

There is still plenty of time to prepare, but this is another sign that business tax records are becoming increasingly digital.

If you still rely heavily on paper or manual processes for invoicing and bookkeeping, now is a good time to start planning ahead.

Sell through an online marketplace?

From October 2027, marketplaces will be responsible for collecting VAT on certain sales made by UK businesses.

That makes accurate records of your sales, fees, refunds and VAT more important than ever.

The amount paid into your bank account doesn’t always show the full picture of what you’ve sold.

Drive your own car or van for work?

Starting in April 2027, the tax-free mileage rate will be 55p for the first 10,000 business miles, then 35p for each qualifying mile above that.

Good news if you spend plenty of time on the road.

Just remember, accurate mileage records matter. Keep track of your journeys, dates and business purpose as you go.

Good news. If you are joining MTD for Income Tax in April 2027, you will not receive penalty points for late submission of your first four quarterly updates during 2027/28.

That first-year easement is designed to give new users time to get used to the system.

Now the important bit.

MTD still applies, and the thresholds are continuing to fall:

• Over £50,000 qualifying income? MTD has applied since April 2026.
• Over £30,000? You will need to use MTD from April 2027.
• Over £20,000? You will join from April 2028.

If you are already using MTD from April 2026, your first-year easement ends in April 2027, so the normal penalty points system will then apply.

Whichever threshold applies to you, keeping your bookkeeping up to date will make MTD much easier to manage.

Do I need a Bookkeeper?
It’s a question often asked. Small businesses the world over find themselves struggling with their books, but don’t want any extra expenses. So, is it really necessary to outsource your bookkeeping?
The simple answer is: there is no simple answer.
It really does depend on you, your time, and your business. You have a lot of options, including purchasing accounting software to make it easier for yourself. But even with the help of these tactics, doing your own books can be daunting, tricky and time consuming.
The question you have to ask yourself is whether it is easy for you to do your own bookkeeping.
Time is precious, and you need to decide how productive it is to be spending your time sorting out your receipts and invoices rather than concentrating on the activities that drive your business.
Bookkeeping is also one of those tasks people tend to put off. It’s about priorities, and bookkeeping – more often than not – falls into that dreaded “to do list”.
At Rosemary Bookkeeping, we aim to take the fear out of your bookkeeping. If you are unsure, we are more than happy to come and help you find out about making tax digital, or simply conduct a 1-2-1 health check to give you the opportunity to decide for yourself if you think you could benefit.
