Libya has been left devastated after Storm Daniel brought heavy rainfall to the area, resulting in 2 Dams collapsing and the ensuing floods.
To put this into perspective, this region usually receives 1.5mm of rain in the entire month of September. When Storm Daniel passed, it dropped 400mm of rain within a 24-hour period. That’s 260 times the monthly average for this region. The dams were not equipped to deal with this amount of rainfall and collapsed under the pressure.
Sadly, over 5,000 people are known to have died, with another 10,000 currently missing. It is estimated that the death toll could rise to nearly 20,000.
