Are you investing by choice or simply by default?

For many people, a workplace pension or investment account was set up years ago, a default fund was selected, and the money has been invested ever since.

But have you ever stopped to ask:

Why am I invested in what I’m invested in?

It’s an important question, particularly if you’ve never actively reviewed the strategy behind your investments.

In my latest article, I explore this through Dominic Bell’s investment journey. Dominic began questioning his own default arrangements and realised that having access to more information wasn't necessarily the answer. What he really needed was a better understanding of what he was investing in, why he was investing and how to take greater responsibility for his decisions.

What makes someone a better investor?

Is it finding the right shares, predicting the next market move or understanding how you react when markets don't go your way?

Stuart's investment journey offers a different perspective. After spending almost a year researching before joining the Great Investments Programme, one of his biggest lessons wasn't about picking stocks.

It was about understanding his own attitude to risk, staying patient through volatility and learning to distinguish market noise from genuine changes in a business.

His story is a reminder that becoming a better investor isn't just about learning more about the markets. It's also about learning more about yourself.

📖 Read Stuart's story and discover why investment psychology can matter just as much as investment knowledge.

Why do some investors stay calm during market falls while others panic? It often comes down to investment psychology.
