🚗 When buying a used WAV, is low mileage always better? In our opinion, not necessarily… Of course, mileage is worth checking. But with a wheelchair accessible vehicle, there’s another side to the story.

A vehicle might have relatively low mileage but have had lots of use of some of the adaptive features such as ramps, lifts, chair restraints and other equipment. So don’t just glance at the number on the dashboard and think you’ve found a winner.

👀 Take a good look at the condition of the whole vehicle. Check the bodywork, tyres, brakes and suspension, and make sure the ramp or lift works properly. It’s also worth checking the MOT history and finding out as much as you can about the vehicle’s maintenance and conversion. And if you’re not confident checking it yourself, getting an independent inspection could be money well spent.

It’s easy to get caught up in the price, mileage and shiny photos. But when you’re buying a used WAV, there are a few extra things you’ll want to check first.

Will your wheelchair actually fit comfortably?
Are the doors, ramp or lift easy to use?
Are the wheelchair restraints secure and in good condition?
Do you know who carried out the conversion?
What does the MOT and maintenance history look like?

❌️ Myth: “It’s just spelling words with your hands.”
✅️ Reality: Fingerspelling is only a small part of sign language, mainly used for names and places. Sign language is primarily used by deaf and hard-of-hearing people, but also by hearing family members, interpreters, teachers and some people with communication difficulties. For many deaf people, sign language is a core part of their identity and culture, not just a communication tool.
