Auld Glenrothes

Auld Glenrothes This page is all about the history of the land and the towns of Glenrothes, Leslie, and Markinch, which all occupy it.

This page is dedicated to the history of land and the towns of Glenrothes, Leslie, and Markinch. Centuries before Glenrothes was ever built, the land was made up of farms with rugged, prime, natural, agricultural land as far as the eye could see going back to the time of the Picts and beyond. Glenrothes was built right in the middle of intersecting land that belonged to the parishes of Leslie, Mar

kinch, Thornton, and Kinglassie, which then made parts of the parishes being dissolved into Glenrothes, e.g. Stenton farm and its land, that belonged to Thornton, became the housing precinct of Stenton, Glenrothes. Auchmuty Farm of Markinch, became the precinct of Auchmuty, Glenrothes. The same with all the precinct and street names that all came from their original parishes they belonged to. This page is jam packed with photographs and info of the parishes and from before Glenrothes was even an idea yet to be built. I feel it is important to preserve the history of the land, to look at THE towns now, its as if that time in the lands history never happened. I hope this page will catch local peoples interest in the towns and the lands history.

The Fife Institute of Physical and Recreational Education, FIPRE, comprised of a complex of indoor and outdoor facilities providing sport from fun beginner's classes to international standards. Facilities include swimming pools, sauna, games hall, gym, squash courts, athletics track, grass, astro turf and weather pitches. The "Insty" or "Fifey" as it became know by locals, was opened by Princess Anne on July 1, 1971, although its then state-of-the-art pool had already been in use for almost 12 months previously. It closed its doors and was demolished in 2012. Demolition photos by Brian Corr

Bank head was a beautiful Georgian house. the rooms were big with high ceilings. the stairs curved to a window ledge and the landing. the windows had wooden shutters. there were 2 big bedrooms and a small box bedroom upstairs. the bathroom was off a landing halfway up the stairs. on the ground floor there was a large hall, a porch that opened into a front walled garden.a cubby hole under the stairs, there was a huge lounge a big dining room suite that had an enormous sideboard and a piano as well as the dining room suite which sat 10 or more people. the kitchen was huge with a fire place. there was a long side board with a marble top which ran the length of the room on one wall. the kitchen sink was tiny and really low. there was a little sitting room next to the kitchen with a tv and phone.
