Dream, Plan, Enjoy - A lesson from Dolly

She came from a shack with a song and a dream,
Nine kids in one bed, patched quilts and cold cream,
But she counted her pennies and she counted her stars,
And she built up a kingdom from a voice and guitar.

Now the rhinestones are quiet and the mountain's gone still,
But she taught us that a woman can climb any hill,
Not just with her voice, but her head for a deal,
She read every contract, she knew what was real.

"Figure out who you are, then do it on purpose,"
With her name on the label, made sure it was worth it,
Turned a theme park, a charity, a hundred good plans
Into something that outlives the woman, the brand.

So here's to the dreamer who never once quit,
Who knew that a budget's as bold as a hit,
Dream it, plan it and live it out loud,
That's the lesson she left us, be humble and proud.

Where do you stand on DIY?

I actually quite enjoy it, specifically painting, although I am a flat pack whizz and have even tiled a bathroom.

Decorating is one thing, it is fairly low cost, not too much can go wrong, it can save you a bit of money if you are starting out. ( except when you knock over a pot of paint on a carpet)

There are however other jobs I won’t touch, the stakes are higher and it could end up costing you more, if it goes wrong especially electrical jobs and plumbing.

So I know when to employ a professional who can do it safely and in a fraction of the time. Some people don’t waste any time or deal with the mess and get a professional in straight away.

It got me thinking about DIY investing and saving the ‘cost of advice’.

I think it is pretty much the same scenario many people dabble in investing in all sorts of things, stocks, ISAs, property, even crypto.

They do it themselves, some more successfully than others. But at what point do you decide I need a professional with this?

Probably like the plumbing, when the stakes are higher, a significant inherited sum, retirement, estate planning. It can be far more complex and costly if it all goes wrong.

It can certainly be much more costly, than fixing a burst pipe!

Judging what some trades charge these days it might even be cheaper!

What are your thoughts on DIY?

Are you running out of time or running out of money?

When you start thinking about retirement , it can bring a stark realisation.

A reality check.

Most people spend years planning for one of these things and never even think about the other.

Either they work hard, save diligently, watch the pension pot grow, tick the boxes and wake up at 60 with plenty of money but they have neglected their health and retirement may not last as long as they thought.

Or the opposite happens.

They're clear on how they want to spend their time, keep themselves healthy but haven't checked whether the money will stretch far enough to fund it, with longer life expectancy.

Real retirement planning holds both of these at once.

Not just "how much do I need" but "what am I actually planning for and does the money support it?"

So give a little consideration today to your situation, do you have the right balance?

It might be time to make a plan for both.

"Are we there yet?"

Four words.

Asked approximately every 11 minutes on every family road trip since the invention of the car.

We can laugh about it.

But it's the same question a lot of us ask about our finances.

Is this pension enough? Am I saving fast enough? When do I actually get there? Everyone wants quick cash now.

20 plus years in this business, has taught us that the best journeys are never about speed.

They are about direction, a decent plan and not turning the car around every time the kids got restless in the back seat. (Although I am sure many are close on that journey right now.)

Retirement planning is the same. Markets wobble. Life throws in a diversion or two. But if the direction's right, the destination usually is too.

So while you're sitting in traffic, waiting in an airport lounge or railway station up and down the country refereeing a squabble over who gets the window seat or who is looking out who's window, maybe it's worth asking are you on the right road with your own plan?

All of the team at Wellington Wealth are proud , thrilled and delighted for Bryce, for recognition in the form of an award at the Plannex® conference this week.

It is almost 5 years since Bryce joined the team. His hard work, commitment & organisation to a structured study programme and timetable has been admirable, whilst also finding a work life balance around that too.

Watching Bryce develop & blossom has been a joy and as a small team we couldn’t have done it without the help of Plannex® particularly Adam, Jon, but also the rest of the team Rohan, Adam and the community past or present.

We always told Bryce don’t just strive for minimum qualifications, aim for the highest the profession has to offer to attract the best, high quality clients in the future.

Very excited to watch Bryce’s high profile career of excellence in this profession develop to the next stage.

☀️ Visitor top tip, ( especially Scottish skin)

London sun is very different especially if it coincides with a heat wave. If your seat is in direct sunshine a Hat, + SPF 50, a handheld fan with a water mist are your best friend. A brolly for between games for sun or rain is also a great idea.
