Recently, I had the conversation with a client that no adviser wants to have.

Following routine surgery, cancer had been discovered.

No illness, no symptoms, completely out of the blue - as they planned their holidays, made social arrangements and went about their daily life.

That’s how it happens, it doesn’t come with any forewarning – the worst imaginable scenario.

What was the one thing I was relieved about when we spoke?

It was that, back when I arranged their mortgage, I had the most important conversation of the whole process with them.

It’s not always an easy one, not everyone wants to prioritise it as they’re busy, but I always tell them it is my duty and responsibility to ensure it is discussed.

Thankfully, this client listened and understood.

And now, they are in the process of making an insurance claim that will ease the financial burden as they go through a very difficult time.

They can concentrate on treatment options and recovery, without worrying about the financial impact of their illness.

Today marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day — Victory in Europe.

On this day in 1945, the war in Europe came to an end as Germany surrendered, and news of peace spread across the nation. Crowds filled the streets in celebration, united in relief and joy after six long years of unimaginable hardship.

But alongside the jubilation, there was deep sorrow. Many were mourning loved ones who had made the ultimate sacrifice — lives lost, families shattered, futures changed forever.

Eighty years on, there are few who remember that moment first hand. That is why commemorating this day remains so important — to honour the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of a generation who gave so much for the freedoms we enjoy today.

It is also a poignant reminder that conflict still persists in parts of the world, and many continue to fight for peace and liberty.

Today, as we reflect and remember, we also give thanks.

The Optimism Bias Trap – A Note to Teachers

As a teacher, you plan everything.
Lessons. Timetables. Targets. Class trips.

But there’s one thing you rarely plan for —
“What if I couldn’t work for a while?”

Most of us assume we’ll always be able to do our job.
That we’ll bounce back. That “it won’t happen to me.”

That’s called optimism bias — and it’s totally human.

But here’s the truth:
🔹 Even with enhanced sick pay, most teachers’ income will reduce over time — sometimes down to half pay or none at all after 6-12 months.
🔹 Recovering from illness, injury, or burnout isn’t something you can pencil into a diary.
🔹 And when pay stops, bills don’t.
