Bookkeepers are more than just number crunchers. They’re essential to any thriving business.

Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and business insight are not optional in business, they’re critical.

The role of a bookkeeper is often misunderstood. A skilled bookkeeper doesn’t just manage the numbers, they bring clarity to complex situations. They identify trends, guide informed decisions, and prevent financial pitfalls.

If you think bookkeeping is merely data entry, you’re overlooking the true value. It’s about grasping your business’s needs and driving its success.

For small business owners or freelancers feeling lost in the numbers, it’s time to shift your perspective.

Schedule a no-obligation call with me to discuss how I can help you tackle your finances with confidence. Focus on what you do best while I handle the numbers.

Are you aware of the difference between salary payments and expense reimbursements?

Many directors might not realise that there are tax-free benefits available through properly handled expense reimbursements that can be more advantageous than a standard salary.

Understanding these options can lead to better financial decisions for your business.

Schedule a no-obligation call with me to discuss how these choices could impact your finances.

As we step into the new year, I wanted to take a moment to reintroduce myself.

I’m Emily, a bookkeeper, business owner, wife, and proud mum of two girls (and a Labradoodle). Business ownership has always been a part of my life, thanks to my father, who was an entrepreneur. I studied undergraduate and postgraduate law at university but ultimately decided that life as a barrister was not the one for me, and I jumped into the business world with him.

When my eldest daughter, Clover, was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition at just three months old, everything changed. After two years of caring for her, I retrained as a bookkeeper, blending my business experience with my new skills to start my own practice and find a business that worked around me and the needs of my family.

Now, while Clover thrives at her special school and my youngest daughter, Nancy, takes on nursery, I’m here in my home office, supporting business owners. I help them build confidence in their numbers, so they can focus on what they love.

If you’re feeling unsure about your finances, know that you’re not alone. I’m just a call away if you want to chat about how I can help.

Happy New Year! 🎉

It’s officially crazy month over here, and it feels great to be back in the office today working through my January to do list.

I still have limited capacity for self assessment tax returns this month, so if you still haven’t looked at yours, or you need some advice, get in touch and we can chat.

Have a great week!

One of the biggest misconceptions we see among small business owners is thinking that being “profitable” automatically means you’ll never run out of money. In reality, cash flow and profit are very different things. You can make sales, issue invoices, and even report a profit at year-end… but if customers don’t pay on time or your costs fall before income arrives, your bank account tells a different story.

That’s why we always encourage business owners to monitor their cash flow separately from their profit and loss. A healthy business needs both.

Have you ever had that confusing moment where your accountant says you’ve made a profit but your bank balance doesn’t agree? Let us know in the comments.

Have you ever tried to learn to play an instrument?

Did you find that you rushed through the bits you knew how to play and hesitated and slowed down on other parts?

When we’re beginners, we’re not optimal at every technicality of playing the instrument. Example: If we’re learning the piano, our fi*****ng can be wrong. And if you keep practising the wrong fi*****ng, you make it much harder to play the tune than it needs to be.

So many business owners we meet are managing their own books, and yes, they're getting by. The numbers add up, they submit their returns, everything looks fine on the surface. But underneath, they're making it so much harder for themselves than it needs to be.

Professional bookkeeping isn't just about getting the maths right - anyone can add up receipts. It's about setting up systems that work with your business, not against it. It's about knowing which expenses you can claim, when to time purchases for maximum tax efficiency, and how to present your numbers in a way that actually helps you make better decisions.

Most importantly, it's about giving you back your time. Time to focus on what you're brilliant at instead of wrestling with spreadsheets at 11pm on a Sunday.

When your business starts growing, so does the chaos (hello, mystery expenses and random invoices).

But the secret to staying on top of it all? Solid financial systems.

Here are 5 must-haves for every ambitious business turning over £300k+:

1. Bookkeeping on autopilot – No more spreadsheets. Use cloud software + bank feeds = real-time clarity.
2. Cash flow forecasting – Know what’s coming in and going out. No surprises = better sleep.
3. Invoicing and payments – Get paid faster with systems that chase for you.
4. Budgeting & planning – Make confident decisions backed by real numbers
5. Reporting that makes sense – Not just data, but insight. So you actually know what’s working.

If you’re still winging it, don’t worry, most business owners are before they find the right support.

"How fast should I be growing?" It's a question we get asked constantly, and our answer always surprises people: "That depends - how fast can your finances keep up?"

Growth without proper financial foundations is like driving a Ferrari with bicycle brakes, so we like to scale systems alongside the business.

The most successful businesses we work with don't just chase growth - they plan for it. They know their capacity limits, understand their cash conversion cycle, and have systems that can scale. When opportunity knocks, they're ready.

Sustainable growth means growing your financial management alongside your revenue. It means having cash flow forecasts that look ahead, systems that can handle increased volume, and the ability to make quick decisions based on accurate data.

Too many businesses hit a growth ceiling not because there isn't demand, but because their back-office systems can't cope. They're spending all their time fighting fires instead of building for the future.

The question isn't whether you should grow - it's whether you're prepared to grow well.

Ready to build financial foundations that support sustainable growth? Let's book a call and make sure your success doesn't overwhelm your systems. The link is in our bio.
