Not all alcohol is born equal

Methanol is an industrial alcohol made from distilling wood and can be found in many commercial products – such as antifreeze, fuel and paint thinners. In some parts of the world, methanol is sometimes illegally mixed with ‘real’ alcohol. And experts believe that as little as 30ml (roughly equivalent to a shot) can be fatal. Just 10ml can cause blindness.

TOP TIPS:
Avoid homemade alcohol, free cocktails or streetside alcohol
Be especially cautious with pre-mixed cocktails served in buckets or jugs
Familiarise yourself with the symptoms of methanol poisoning
Seek urgent medical assistance if you suspect you’ve been exposed

Did you know this long weekend has been around since 1871? It was introduced by Sir John Lubbock, a banker and MP, who wanted to give bank workers a guaranteed day off. Reportedly, he was a keen cricket fan and liked the idea of workers having time for a match! It was originally held on the first Monday of August, before moving to the last Monday back in 1971.

150+ years later, it's still one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. easyJet alone is running over 800,000 seats out of UK airports this weekend, with Amsterdam and Paris among the most popular quick getaways. ✈️

Want to ride a moped on holiday?

Check your travel cover.

If you don’t have a license to ride it at home, you don’t have a license to ride it abroad.

Even with the mandatory helmet and safety gear, very few travel insurance providers cover moped riding. So if you want to ride, check with your chosen travel insurance provider first. Otherwise if you have an accident, you could be left having to pay huge medical bills on your own

Every year Brits are seriously hurt in balcony falls while on holiday. The simple advice: never sit, lean or climb on balcony railings. And if you’ve had one or two at the poolside bar, it’s best to stay away from the edge altogether. Not many people are aware that hotels can fine or evict guests for unsafe behaviour.
