Controlling someone’s money is abuse.

For International Day of Charity, we’re highlighting the vital work of Surviving Economic Abuse - SEA 💜

Their latest findings show a worrying gap in recognising controlling financial behaviours as abuse.

Economic abuse can include controlling spending, restricting access to money, forcing someone into debt, or making it difficult for someone to work, study, leave or rebuild safely.

The findings show that young women aged 18–24 experience the highest rates of economic abuse in the UK.

They also found that 19% of men aged 18–24 do not recognise controlling how someone spends their money as abuse, compared with 6% of 45–54-year-olds.

That gap in understanding matters.

Because controlling someone’s financial freedom is abuse.

And greater awareness can help more people recognise the signs, challenge harmful attitudes and support victim-survivors safely.
