After four years of independent water testing, one thing is painfully clear: Christchurch Harbour is in trouble.
Our harbour is small and fragile. Unlike larger harbours, it simply cannot cope with the growing levels of pollution flowing down the Rivers Avon and Stour. Excess nitrates from agriculture, phosphates from overloaded sewage systems, road runoff, E. coli, forever chemicals, and other pollutants are all placing huge pressure on this incredible natural habitat.
The effects are already being seen through increased algal blooms, declining water quality, and the impact on the wildlife that depends on the harbour.
Our volunteer team has worked tirelessly to gather consistent, reliable evidence because someone has to keep shining a light on what's happening. The Environment Agency is under immense pressure and underfunded, but local communities can still make a difference.
In March 2025, more than 4,000 people signed a petition calling for better protection of Christchurch Harbour. An Environmental Protection Policy was presented to BCP Council and was unanimously approved.
Since then... almost nothing has happened.
📅 That could change on 15th July, when the Environment & Place Committee decides what happens next. This is a crucial moment for Christchurch Harbour.
