Protecting yourself or business from the unscrupulous is more of a challenge than ever. All a fraudster needs to set up a DD through your business or personal account is your account number and sort code.

Most of us these days, pay our business suppliers via BACS, in order to do so, they need your bank details. Those details can then be sold to on to fraudsters etc and the first time you find out you have been fleeced is when money disappears from your account. You are of course protected by the DD guarantee but it's still bloody frustrating and considering the technological age we live in, there is virtually no security other than the fact you will get your money back. Its also called slamming the gate shut after the horse has bolted.

The only tool the banks have that can provide some early warning of an impending fraudulent transaction is 'text alert' which notifies you immediately a new DD has been set up.

Also, stating the obvious, checking your bank account daily or at least weekly is absolutely imperative.
