Schools in England could face further strike action as the National Education Union has asked teachers to reject a new pay offer, after intensive talks.

The government has offered teachers a £1,000 extra cash payment this year and a 4.3% rise for most staff next year.

The Education Committee has launched a new inquiry into teacher recruitment, training and retention in state-funded English schools.

Recent figures show that the Government has been unable to meet its recruitment targets for trainee secondary teachers: having reached only 59% of the target for trainees recruited for Initial Teacher Training in the year 2022/23, down from 79% in 2021/22:

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced yesterday an “ambition” for all primary schools to provide childcare between the hours of 8am and 6pm. £289 million in “start-up funding” will be provided over the next 3 years for schools and councils to “test options to increase the availability of wraparound childcare in the longer term”.
