Last night was the annual Sports Federation Dinner at A brilliant night celebrating the many achievements of the current generation. I had the honour of awarding The Mark Burgess Award for Services to Rugby again on behalf of Mark’s family.

The 25th Winner of the award was this year’s Men’s Rugby 1st XV Vice-Captain, Brad Nicholson . A throughly deserving winner, over the four years he has taken himself from a fringe player to starting and staring in this years 1st XV Varsity. What really resonated with Mark’s family though was last year when Brad realised he would struggle to get 1st XV minutes he stepped forward to reestablish our the 2nd XV missing since Covid, recruited for it, captained it and therefore made sure that everyone in the club had a rugby playing experience. Very much like Mark did with the Wild Geese.

Also shortlisted were this year Men’s Rugby VP Milo Kubicki and for the first time a fresher Women’s VC Darcy McMahon .m._ (one to watch moving forward for sure) - well done both.

Brad, you have joined an exclusive and high quality winners club and added to Mark & C4 Rugby’s legacy. Congratulations.

Varsity Rugby - Wednesday 22nd April 2026

For the first time in many years C4 arrived into the final day of Varsity with a chance of still winning it overall for the first ever time. Sadly, by the time it got to the rugby in the evening that dream was gone for another year. However, it didn’t diminish the excitement for the 27th Varsity Rugby Night Under The Lights at Canterbury Rugby Club.

It’s been a tough year for both C4 Men’s and Women’s Rugby having both struggled for numbers throughout the season. Yet come varsity and with the help of some eager post-grads and a couple of womens footballers, both teams were able to put out competitive squads.

In the first game it really was neck and neck, score for score, with Kent only finally pulling away at the end beating our women’s team 29 - 17.

The men’s game that followed was the full blooded affair we have come to expect with no quarter being given. Unfortunately another Kent victory 43 - 0 but the result doesn’t reflect how hard Kent were made to work for every point and the many visits C4 made to the Kent 22 without being able to cross the line.

All we ask is that the currents give 100% and leave it all on the field for the shirt and both sets of C4 players certainly did. After a hard season, they can end it holding their heads up high.

Last Wednesday was the annual Sports Federation Dinner at A brilliant night celebrating the many achievements of the current generation. I had the honour of awarding The Mark Burgess Award for Services to Rugby again. The 24th Winner of the award was this year’s Men’s Rugby President Finn McCabe. A throughly deserving winner, he has gone above and beyond putting the team above all else. He has taken on so many roles and responsibilities beyond he own all with the drive to make the club better. He really has set the bench mark for future presidents to strive for.

Also shortlisted were last year skipper and this year’s Women’s Captain .sandeman, fresh off leading the girls to their 105-0 stuffing of Kent at Varsity - well done both.

Finn, you have joined an exclusive and high quality winners club and added to Mark & C4 Rugby’s legacy. Congratulations.

Last Friday saw the end of this year’s Varsity week played out under those Friday Night Lights at Canterbury Rugby club with the two Varsity Rugby matches.

It was the 26th Men’s Rugby fixture and C4 took on the role we so often have as plucky underdogs to a UKC team who have been at the top of the league above for the last two seasons. Excellently led by Captain he, alongside President .mccabe had got the lads into a great place to compete. It was a cracking game of rugby and we entered the last 10 minutes only 6 points behind. Despite the game ebbing and flowing, eventually Kent scored with the last play of the match to take the game away from the lads 24-13. Well played to the lads that to a man did themselves, the shirt and those that have come before, proud.

The 20th Women’s Rugby Varsity match was role reversals with our girls back in Southeast Tier 1 this year and competing at the top of it, against a team at the bottom of the league below. This group of women’s were determined to have no slip ups, President bringing the attitude throughout build up of them having nothing to lose and us having it all to. Led by the supreme athlete that is skipper .sandeman the girls set about to play their structures and game plan throughout.

Kent couldn’t live with them and our girls blew them off of the park all night long. In doing so they broke our highest score varsity record, our highest point difference and, with the try in the last play, they avenged our Womens worst ever varsity defeat of 104 - 0 by winning 105-0!!!!!! Every single one of you were magnificent in both attack and dogged defence as you were determined to nil them.

It was the tonic C4 needed after a tough Varsity week and means that the 2010 girls can sleep easy knowing that defeat is finally lifted off the record books forever.
