Sometimes the letters pile up, life gets overwhelming, and the last thing someone needs is judgement or another person telling them what they should be doing.

Whether it’s life challenges or business finances, sometimes we need someone to listen before we can find a way forward.

As 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 comes to an end, I’ve been reflecting on why I talk about mental health alongside bookkeeping.

Because sometimes we need to 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀.

Look at things differently.
Challenge what we think we know.
And perhaps, most importantly, pause before making assumptions.

So here’s a little challenge for you…

There’s more to this sentence than meets the eye.

And there’s a reason I’ve chosen it for my final post of the month.

I hope over the last few weeks I’ve brought a little hope, encouraged a conversation, or made someone stop and think.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 💜

As a bookkeeper, I work with numbers every day. But behind every number is a person.

𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀.
Not on a spreadsheet.
Not in a set of accounts.
Not in a diagnosis.
Not in a statistic.

At 𝙑𝘾𝙋𝘼, supporting people means supporting the whole person, including their mental health.

So this month:

𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲

Today isn’t about the moment, it’s about the lasting thoughts and those to come that make us feel scared, anxious and worthless.

As a Mental Health First Aider and welcoming it into my profession, I always want to recognise how hard times can become.

Lost
Lonely
Helplessness

… to mention just a few. There are so many more words, none of which are invalid. But so hard to appreciate.

Nothing in mental health is selfish. It’s uncontrolled. It’s unmanageable. It’s a depth of depression and desperation no one will ever know until you 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐇 𝐎𝐔𝐓.

I’m begging you, stop it at the brink.
When you have ‘that moment’ and it lasts a week, 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐇 𝐎𝐔𝐓.

Maybe someone you know is in a pit of sadness and it’s been too long. 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐂𝐇 𝐎𝐔𝐓.

Being down is different. When it lasts, it’s not ‘𝙣𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙡’. Whatever that is.

What do we do when so many comments, opinions and expectations are thrown our way? When actually, all we’re doing is 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁?

Maybe we stop trying to fix, judge or label people.

Maybe we listen.

Maybe we ask, “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱?”

Because sometimes “𝗜’𝗺 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁” really is enough 💜
